Nostalgia-heads, your time is now: Deadline reports that a new set of animated Ghostbusters projects are currently in the works at Sony. Alongside a previously announced animated series, the studio is now also working on an animated film, with Kris Pearn set to direct. Jason Reitman, son of original Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman is set to produce both projects for Sony.

According to Deadline, “sources close to the development of this film see this as something that could do for the IP what the Beyond the Spider-Verse films have done for Spider-Man.” Whether either project is connected to the animated series that raised a generation is unclear. No details about either the film or the series have been released, including whether any of the original film stars or the cast of Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire will reprise their roles in animated form.

This might mark the next serious move for the franchise, after the middling success of Frozen Empire and core star Dan Aykroyd’s comments about the original Ghostbusters being retired for good. “I don’t see that coming,” he told The New York Post. “I don’t see where they would need us to carry it on. They’ve got a whole new cast, and they’ve got whole new ideas. I think probably they’re going to move on to advancing it beyond the originals, which they should.”

Despite that, Frozen Empire director Gil Kenan has hinted that there could be future installments starring the legacy sequels’ current cast, which includes Finn Wolfhard, Carrie Coon, Paul Rudd, and James Acaster, among others. Whether these new animated projects are what he was referring to is unknown.

While we’ve never had an animated Ghostbusters film before, the animated series will be the third to hit screens since the franchise began in 1984, after The Real Ghostbusters, which aired on ABC between 1986 and 1991, and Extreme Ghostbusters, which premiered in 1997.

No release date or cast information is available for either animated Ghostbusters project. Stay tuned to FANGORIA for more updates as they arrive.
