Even kings die. It’s something that even the King of the Monsters isn’t immune to. That’s right. Godzilla is going to die. The folks at IDW have announced that the current, ongoing Godzilla comic book series as part of the Kai-Sei Era line is going to kick off 2026 with the biggest death of all. Writer Tim Seeley and artist Nikola Čižmešija’s are going to kill the most popular kaiju in all the land.

It all goes down in the pages of Godzilla #6, which hits shelves in January. While we have more questions than answers for the time being, the publisher confirmed that the issue will feature the death of the iconic monster. As a means of immortalizing the big moment, comic book icon Dan Jurgens (The Death of Superman) has crafted a new “Death of” homage cover, calling to mind the famed DC Comics storyline that killed Superman in the ‘90s. Check it out.

“When the good folks at IDW asked about the possibility of a special ‘Death of Godzilla' cover that would play off the iconic cover that Brett Breeding and I did for Superman #75, I was definitely up for it,” Jurgens said. ”I’ve always been a fan of the big guy but hadn’t had a chance to draw him so this was the perfect way to scratch that itch. It was great fun to be able to contribute!”
Now, anyone with even a passing familiarity when it comes to comic books can probably tell you this death won’t be as permanent as death in most other mediums, or in real life. Godzilla just launched in July and IDW has no plans on concluding this grand experiment so soon. Case in point, February’s Godzilla #7 from writer Seeley and artist Hendry Prasetya will herald the mysterious return of the king. As the publisher teased, “Freed from the constraints of its physical body and unleashed as its most powerful form ever: Kai-Sei Energy Godzilla!” Aaron John Gregory, Godzilla Product Development Manager, had this to say about it:
“Allowing IDW to ‘kill’ Godzilla only six issues in to the new Kai-sei Era series just goes to show how much trust TOHO International has in both rock-star writer Tim Seeley and Eisner winning Godzilla editor Jake Williams. These types of comic events cannot be handled lightly. In '92, as a young teenager I waited in a long line to buy a copy of Superman #75, ‘The Death of Superman’, and was blown away by the consequential brutality in those pages. I can tell you that the incredible team behind our new Kai-Sei era of Godzilla have delivered on that level; with all the electrifying excitement and pummeling panache you’ve come to expect in this series. You may need a kaiju-sized Kleenex.”

“Comics should be insane. And personally, I can't think of a more insane way to end arc 1 of the first ongoing Godzilla series in over a decade than KILLING GODZILLA,” added editor Jake Williams. “For anyone waiting to check out this series – now's the time to jump on. We're delivering a Godzilla unlike any other, and finally making good on our promise to showcase ‘a boy with the power of Godzilla.'”
In addition to the main cover, we’ve also got several other variant issues for the landmark issue for you to check out below, as well as the initial cover art for issue #7 above.
