Awards season is ramping up in Hollywood with the stars out last night the 83rd Golden Globe Awards, and while it wasn't the best night for horror, there's still plenty to celebrate.
Fresh off of its FANGORIA Chainsaw Awards bloodbath, Ryan Coogler's Sinners swept the nominations back in December with seven nods, including Best Picture – Drama, Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for star Michael B. Jordan and his double take on twins Smoke and Stack, Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, Best Director – Motion Picture and Screenplay for Coogler, Original Score for Ludwig Göransson and Original Song for “I Lied to You”.
Other horror hits among the nominees were Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein for Best Picture – Drama, and Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for Oscar Isaac as the titular Baron, Wednesday's Jenna Ortega for Best Female Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy, while Zach Cregger's Weapons scored a nom for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.

We're biased, of course, but personally we think horror (and especially Sinners) deserved more love last night. But that didn't mean our favorite genre went home empty-handed: Coogler's vampire epic took home Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, well-earned considering it's the biggest original Hollywood movie since Inception, and Best Original Score for Ludwig Göransson. In other exciting Sinners news, star Wunmi Mosaku revealed her pregnancy on the red carpet, with a correlating emotional piece for Vogue.
FANGORIA contributor Paul Thomas Anderson was the big winner of the night, taking home Best Director and Best Screenplay for One Battle After Another, with the action thriller also winning Best Film (Musical or Comedy), and star Teyana Taylor taking home Best Female Actor in a Supporting Role.

Elsewhere, Jessie Buckley, next seen starring in Maggie Gyllenhaal's upcoming monster movie shakeup The Bride!, was awarded Best Female Actor in a Film – Drama for her role in Hamnet from director Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, the upcoming Buffy the Vampire Slayer continuation, Buffy: New Sunnydale), while Insidious‘s Rose Byrne took home Best Female Actor In a Film – Musical or Comedy for If I Had Legs I'd Kick You and Bones and All's Timothée Chalamet won Best Male Actor In a Film – Musical or Comedy for Marty Supreme.
We've already laid out why Sinners deserves to win big at the Oscars, and while Golden Globes wins don't strictly correlate with Academy Awards success, there is often overlap between the two. Plenty of horror titles have made it onto the official shortlist, but we'll have to wait until January 22 for the official Oscar nominations to be announced. Fingers crossed, and watch this space.
