It may have taken until mid-February, but we had our first bonafide blockbuster weekend at the box office. The lion’s share of that was owed to Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World, which opened to $88 million domestically over Valentine’s Day weekend, which also coincides with the President’s Day holiday today. Be that as it may, the superhero flick didn’t box out everything else this weekend, as the family-friendly Paddington in Peru also opened strong. Most impressive of all? Heart Eyes, a holdover from last weekend, absolutely killed it.

Director Josh Ruben’s rom-com/slasher pulled in a very impressive $10 million on its second weekend. That was good enough for third place behind Paddington, which opened to $13 million domestically benefiting from the family crowd. Heart Eyes actually made more this weekend than it did in its debut when it pulled in a little over $8 million against the Super Bowl. That’s something we truly rarely see for a movie that opens wide on its first weekend.

So, what went right for Sony Pictures and Mr. Ruben here? Well, for one, this was kind of the strongest game in town for the Valentine’s Day crowd. The movie is as much of a rom-com as it is a horror movie and both genres play well for the date night folks. And again, reviews for the film have been pretty darn kind. To date, it has pulled in $22.6 million domestically against an $18 million budget. Very good word of mouth coupled with overseas grosses should turn this into a winner for Sony.
Also opening in North America this weekend was the Chinese blockbuster Ne Zha 2. The film has been on an absolute tear in China, pulling in more than $1.6 billion (with a B) after less than three weeks of release. It opened to a solid $7.3 million in the U.S, but that’s change in the couch cushions. Within days, this will be one of the ten biggest movies ever. Soon, it will be one of only a handful of movies to ever make $2 billion or more globally. Truly wild stuff.
Elsewhere in horror, Warner Bros. and New Line’s Companion is fading fast. In its third weekend, the acclaimed sci-fi/horror picture pulled in $1.8 million, barely staying in the top ten. It has made $19 million domestically to go with $14.2 million overseas thus far for a running total of $33.2 million. That’s totally fine on a $10 million budget, it’s just not the breakout hit we thought it perhaps could have been.

Looking ahead, horror fans have a big one to look forward to this upcoming weekend as Oz Perkins’ follow-up to Longlegs arrives in the form of The Monkey. With Stephen King source material and great reviews on its side, this one figures to have a strong debut. From there, we don't have much by way of big horror releases until The Woman in the Yard arrives in late March. So Perkins' latest will have a lot of runway to do big business.
