Professional sports are no laughing matter, and Universal is here to prove that with their latest horror film, Him. They’ve just released a new featurette for the film, which hits theaters next month, diving into just how easy it is to bring blood and guts into an already violent sport like football.
Produced by Jordan Peele, Him stars Marlon Wayans and Tyriq Withers, following a star football player who collides with an iconic but volatile quarterback whom he idolizes. The film’s synopsis is as follows:
Cameron Cade, a rising-star quarterback, has devoted his life, and identity, to football. On the eve of professional football’s annual scouting Combine, Cam is attacked by an unhinged fan and suffers a potentially career-ending brain trauma.
Just when all seems lost, Cam receives a lifeline when his hero, Isaiah White, a legendary eight-time Championship quarterback and cultural megastar, offers to train Cam at Isaiah’s isolated compound that he shares with his celebrity influencer wife, Elsie White. But as Cam’s training accelerates, Isaiah’s charisma begins to curdle into something darker, sending his protégé down a disorienting rabbit hole that may cost him more than he ever bargained for.
Him, originally titled GOAT, is directed by Justin Tipping, and written by Zack Ayers and Skip Bronkie, who made the Black List in 2022 with the script. The sports horror is also set to co-star Julia Fox, Tim Heidecker, Jim Jeffries, and Indira G. Wilson, as well as hip-hop stars Guapdad 4000 and Tierra Whack. Alongside Peele as producer, the film is also produced by Ian Cooper, Win Rosenfeld, and Jamal M. Watson.
The featurette spotlights Peele praising Tipping’s direction in bringing horror into the world of professional sports, alongside Tipping discussing his inspiration for the piece. Him is Peele’s latest cinematic effort as a producer to receive any news, despite having a new film as director planned for a 2026 release. Initially set for last Christmas, the film was delayed by the SAG and WGA strikes and has yet to receive any kind of updates after being removed from Universal’s release calendar — including a title.
Him hits theaters on September 19. Check out the new featurette below:
