7 Slashers To Watch If You’re Excited For I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER

From legacy sequels to gory kills beneath the summer sun, we've got you covered.

There’s something so fun about summertime slashers that really gets us going, and naturally, I Know What You Did Last Summer is a great example of that. On July 18th, we’re getting an exciting legacy sequel in I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025), as well as a much-needed summer-set slasher. It's been over 20 years since the release of I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, giving us enough distance to get pumped up about returning to Southport for more death by hook.

If you’re a slasher fan excited about this latest installment in the IKWYDLS franchise, you’ve come to the right place, folks. Whether you’re a longstanding fan of both the first two films (or not), you might be craving some summer slasher goodness while you await the next installment. There is certainly no shortage of slashers to choose from in general, but the following are a particularly perfect fit if you’re excited to watch I Know What You Did Last Summer. The movies below range from sequels and slashers with brutal kills featuring attractive people being targeted to general fun, or simply because they fit the general summertime vibe.

It’s time to put on your running shoes and avoid the hook-wielding killer because we’re going on a bit of a journey. Binge-watch the following recommendations, and you’ll definitely have a good time.

  • I Still Know What You Did Last Summer

Yes, it’s an obvious choice, but it’s totally necessary viewing because I Know What You Did Last Summer is its legacy sequel, so we'd suggest watching both existing films in the franchise. I Still Know What You Did Last Summer follows Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt) a year after she survived the mayhem in Southport. When she wins a group vacation to the Bahamas, her vacation turns into a nightmare when she’s hunted once again by a mysterious killer.

The film isn’t technically better than the original I Know What You Did Last Summer, but it fits the bill for late ‘90s slasher fun. The upcoming legacy sequel is sticking with the continuity, so it's a good time for a refresher (or first-time watch). You’ll appreciate the references and returning characters of Julie and Ray (Freddie Prinze Jr.) a bit more with this one under your belt. It’s worth putting on if you want to get extra pumped for what’s to come in this long-awaited sequel.

  • The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)

As far as horror remakes go, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is by far one of the best. The film follows a group of friends who experience terror when they meet Leatherface and his cannibalistic family. It’s a brutal journey with no shortage of kills and scary moments featuring a group that you wish could survive. There’s so much to love about this remake of Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and it holds up against its classic horror film inspiration, which is a rarity.

It’s the perfect slasher for a summertime slasher marathon, especially when the film makes you feel the blazing heat because of how sweaty everyone is. Whether it’s the sweat, the Texas heat, or the violence that kicks off during the day, you’re bound to be satisfied with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

  • Sorority Row (2009)

BRIANA EVIGAN stars in SORORITY ROW.

Sorority Row is a remake of 1982's The House on Sorority Row and follows sorority girls who cover up an unnecessary prank that resulted in death. Eight months after the accident, the girls find themselves targeted by a ruthless masked killer. Sound familiar? It’s a schlocky late 2000s horror remake that features plenty of horrible characters, brutal death scenes, and cool set pieces.

It doesn’t hold a candle to The House on Sorority Row, and it isn’t on many of our best of horror remakes lists. However, the fact that it focuses on characters who make horrible decisions and later suffer because of them does sound similar, no? In any case, it’s not a film that takes itself too seriously, and quite a bit of it doesn’t age well, but if you’re looking for a slasher that features brutal kills and an unsettling killer costume, you might find some enjoyment!

  • Fear Street Part Two: 1978

Of all the films in the Fear Street trilogy, Fear Street Part Two: 1978 is often labeled as a fan favorite. The film primarily follows the 1978 massacre at Camp Nightwing and adds further details to how deep the curse in Shadyside is. Fear Street Part Two: 1978 is told through the perspective of a survivor of the massacre and dives deeper into the lore. It has similar vibes to Friday the 13th Part 2, thanks to the killer's design, and it's overall very stylish, featuring a nod to late ‘70s ambiance.

As far as summer slashers go, if you’re looking for something that’s come out more recently, then you’ll really dig this one. Of course, watching Fear Street Part One: 1994 is necessary to get the full scope of the story, but you won’t be disappointed in that one, either. The trilogy is available on Netflix, so if you have a subscription, then what are you waiting for?

  • There’s Someone Inside Your House

Looking for a killer who wears masks resembling the people they are trying to kill? Yeah, this film has that. There’s Someone Inside Your House follows a teen girl named Makani (Sydney Park) who moves to a Nebraska town and becomes wrapped up in a series of murders. It’s not a film that does anything new for the genre or slashers, but its components involving secrets and unfortunate accidents do add intrigue. Plus, it’s not every day that the final girl in a one-off slasher is a woman of color, so that’s a bonus!

In many ways, There’s Someone Inside Your House is your typical Netflix slasher, but if that doesn’t deter you, then you might like it. It’s based on a book of the same name by Stephanie Perkins, so if you want to read that before watching the film, just to play a game of comparison, then you can! Otherwise, it’s a slasher flick to turn on when you’re in the mood for something relatively straightforward.

  • Scream (2022)

    SCREAM (2022).

It’s hard not to call it Scream 5, right? The fifth installment in the Scream franchise, Scream (2022) is set 25 years after the original Ghostface murders and follows a new generation of Woodsboro residents who are targeted by a new Ghostface. As far as legacy sequels go, Scream (or 5cream as some folks like to joke) is one that people were extremely amped up for. It brings back beloved legacy characters and manages to kill one of them, which hurt the fans quite a damn bit.

Love it or be lukewarm about it, Scream (2022) ticks a lot of the boxes as far as what people might want from a horror legacy sequel. We got Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox), and Deputy Dewey (David Arquette) back, the passing of the torch to Sam (Melissa Barrera) as a subversive final girl, and her sister Tara (Jenna Ortega) in a gory return to Woodsboro.

  • Clown In A Cornfield

    Clown in a Cornfield (2025).

There’s not a single thing wrong with a fun and semi-serious slasher with a creepy masked killer. Clown in a Cornfield follows a midwestern town that is being terrorized by a killer who is wearing their defunct town mascot’s costume. The film is based on the first book in a trilogy by Adam Cesare, and there's lots to appreciate even if you’ve never read the book.

Clown in a Cornfield is a modern slasher with no shortage of death scenes, whether the characters are all interesting or not isn’t the point. The midwestern setting works, there are a few familiar faces, and there are a handful of good deaths. It’s not attached to a film franchise, and that means it’s fresh in its own right. Slasher fans looking for fun will potentially enjoy this one. Also, clowns are absolutely terrifying, and that mask is creepy as hell

Clown in a Cornfield is available on Shudder and AMC+ on August 8.
