Summer’s here, and that means the wildest horror movies filmmakers can imagine are too. Utopia has just announced that they’ve secured the United States distribution rights for Hot Spring Shark Attack, an upcoming animal attack horror comedy that’s just as wild as its sounds. The Japanese film will land in the US this summer, joining the company’s prestigious list of titles that also includes Pet Shop Days, Shiva Baby, The Sweet East, Holy Spider, and Red Rooms.

The horror comedy is “set in a small, hot spring town in Japan, where a ferocious ancient shark reawakens and terrorizes the local hot spring facilities. As the threat escalates, the townspeople band together to protect their beloved town from the menacing predator, leading to a fierce and thrilling battle.” It marks the directorial debut of Morihito Inoue, a two-time winner of Japan’s National Independent Kaiju Film Championship.

Ahead of a wide release, Hot Spring Shark Attack will have its United States premieres at the opening night of Chattanooga Film Festival in June. The festival will also feature a beach-themed opening night party with performances from the band Big Kahuna and themed beverages from Cathead Distillery, as well as a “karaoke clambake” to celebrate the zany film’s release.

Hot Spring Shark Attack is the second shark-themed horror film to be announced just this week. We also saw the release of the trailer for Dangerous Animals, a new film from Sean Byrne starring Jai Courtney as a serial killer obsessed with ritualistically feeding his victims to sharks. Will the poor things ever get a break after Jaws did them dirty?

An exact US release date for Hot Spring Shark Attack has not been set. Stay tuned to FANGORIA for more updates.
