Jake Gyllenhaal is set to lead an upcoming supernatural romantic thriller based on an original story co-created by M. Night Shyamalan and global-bestselling novelist Nicholas Sparks, Deadline reports today.
Here's where things get a little more complicated; Shyamalan and Sparks are independently writing a screenplay and a novel, respectively, “based on the same original love story. Both projects will be based on the same concept and set of characters, but tailored to their respective mediums.” Interesting.
Sparks is, of course, famous for lovey-dovey classics like The Notebook and A Walk to Remember, so we're curious to see what he'll come up with alongside horror master Shyamalan, who is coming off another genre hit with last year's Trap starring Josh Hartnett. The concert-set thriller grossed $82.7 million worldwide for Warner Bros, who are in discussion right now regarding a theatrical release for the Gyllenhaal romance thriller.
Gyllenhaal is no stranger to genre, having made a name for himself in the psychological cult classic Donnie Darko and later a slew of crime-focused thrillers such as Zodiac, Prisoners and Nightcrawler. He's also set to appear in The Bride!, the upcoming Frankenstein musical from his sister, Maggie Gyllenhaal.
Deadline also let us know that Shyamalan and Ashwin Rajan will produce through Blinding Edge Pictures, alongside Sparks’ longtime producing partner Theresa Park and Marc Bienstock. Sparks is Executive Producer.
Needless to say, this one has our interest piqued. Keep an eye out for updates as we get them.
