DC's upcoming Clayface movie, penned by horror master Mike Flanagan, will be directed by Speak No Evil and Eden Lake director James Watkins, THR reports today.

Scheduled for release on September 11, 2026 via Warner Bros., Clayface is produced by The Batman' s Matt Reeves, as well as DC Studios bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran, and Lynn Harris.

Based on the shapeshifting supervillain of the same name introduced back in Detective Comics #40 back in 1940, the Clayface movie is said to follow:

… a Hollywood horror tale centering on a B-movie actor who injects himself with a substance to keep himself relevant, only to find out that he can reshape his face and form, becoming a walking piece of clay.

THR sources say the film is budgeted at $40 million and is due to shoot later this year.

Casting news for Clayface is still under wraps, but according to THR, Gunn and Safran have said that actors who work in animation on DC Studios projects will play the live-action character. As THR remind, that could mean Alan Tudyk, Ron Perlman, Gotham's Brian McManamon, or Lorraine Burroughs who played Clayface on Pennyworth.

A previous tweet from Flanagan teased that the Midnight Mass director (currently working on a new The Exorcist movie and Carrie series for Amazon) wanted to take a “horror/thriller/tragedy” approach to Clayface.

Look out for more on Clayface as we get it.
