Dinosaurs are once again here to rule the Earth. Or the global box office at least, as Universal Pictures’ Jurassic World Rebirth stomped into theaters all over the world. In keeping with this franchise’s track record, it posted a monster opening, in no small part thanks to the long Fourth of July holiday.

Directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, The Creator), Rebirth opened to an estimated $147.3 million across its first five days of release in North America, having arrived in theaters on Wednesday. It also pulled in a whopping $171 million internationally for a $318.3 million global start. While a whole lot of context is needed, that is technically the second-biggest global opening for the Jurassic World franchise to date.
However – and this is a fairly big however – all of the other entries in the Jurassic World trilogy had traditional three-day openings, with Dominion arriving to $145 million domestically. Its international release was staggered, opening in several territories a week before its U.S. rollout. Meanwhile, 2015’s Jurassic World had one of the biggest opening weekends of all time, pulling in $208 million in the U.S. alone before an eventual $1.67 billion global finish, making it one of the biggest movies of all time.
Jurassic World Rebirth had the benefit of that long weekend. Case in point, it made $91.5 million over the traditional weekend. But those numbers are skewed in light of the long holiday. Even still, that $147.3 million figure now represents a new record for the Fourth of July weekend, overtaking 2022’s Minions: The Rise of Gru ($123 million). That’s nothing to sneeze at.
The seventh film in the franchise takes place five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion. The planet’s ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs and they now mostly exist in isolated environments near the Equator. A team must head to a restricted island as the three most colossal dinosaurs hold the key to a drug with life-saving benefits. The cast includes Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, Rubert Friend, and Jonathan Bailey.
Critics have been somewhat mixed on Rebirth, though audiences are largely eating it up. Though it has been greeted with a far warmer welcome than Dominion was in 2022, which is key as Universal needed to win audiences over once again, lest they risk diminishing returns for one of the studio’s biggest moneymakers. As of right now there are no confirmed plans for a sequel, but this is one of those cash cows they will continue to milk until she’s dry, that much is certain.
All three of the previous Jurassic World movies all cleared $1 billion globally. Whether or not Rebirth has that much gas in the tank remains to be seen. But word of mouth figures to be relatively positive and these movies make a lot of money overseas. Even so, it doesn’t need $1 billion to be a success. With this opening, it’s already well on its way to being one of Hollywood’s biggest hits of the year.
