Kevin Bacon is an acting legend. Across more than four decades, the man has amassed well over 100 movie and TV credits. For Fango readers, the man has been a staple of the horror genre dating back to the very beginning of his career when he met his demise at the hands of Pamela Voorhees in the original Friday the 13th. Bacon not only stars in horror films pretty regularly, but he’s also a pretty big fan of the genre. As proof of that, the 66-year-old got into the spirit of the season by sharing some of his favorite horror movies of all time.
Taking to Instagram, Bacon decided to offer up some Halloween season viewing suggestions by way of stating, in no particular order, 20 of his personal favorite genre films. The list is one only a true horror lover could spit off the top of one’s head, including everything from bonafide classics to underrated gems. Not to mention some movies that he personally starred in. In his defense, Bacon has been in some pretty damn good movies, so let’s not get on him for playing favorites. Unranked, here are all of the movies he mentioned…
- Audition
- Don’t Look Now
- One Cut of the Dead
- Dawn of the Dead (1978)
- Shaun of the Dead
- 28 Days Later
- Get Out
- A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night
- Let The Right One In
- X
- Pearl
- MaXXXine
- The Witch
- The Love Witch
- The Blair Witch Project
- The Descent
- Slither
- Midsommar
- Martyrs
- Hereditary
- Smile
- Stir of Echoes
There’s an awful lot to discuss here. The man came hot out of the gate with some stone-cold classics in the form of Audition and Don’t Look Now. He also was very clear that his Dawn of the Dead pick was George A. Romero’s 1978 original, which graced the cover of FANGORIA #1 back in the day, and not Zack Snyder’s 2004 remake, all due respect. Bacon also showed some love to the sometimes under-loved horror/comedy with Edgar Wright’s Shaun of the Dead making the cut. Bacon is clearly a zombie fan as he also put Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later on his list, which is hard to argue against.

The actor was also more than willing to show some love for modern horror, highlighting the entirety of Ti West’s X trilogy, which concluded earlier this year with MaXXXine. Yes, Bacon was in that movie, but he had nothing to do with X and Pearl other than being a fan. He also shouted out both Ari Aster’s Hereditary and Midsommar, both of which have certainly achieved modern classic status. Again, in a pick nobody in their right mind could argue with, Bacon also shouted out Jordan Peele’s Oscar-winning Get Out. No notes.
Showing some love for himself, Bacon also rounded out the list by including 1999’s very underrated Stir of Echoes, which he was right to do in my very humble opinion. Deciding to highlight some work by his daughter Sosie Bacon, he also shouted out 2022’s huge hit Smile, which was directed by Parker Finn. Overall, it’s a nice list that runs the gamut from indie gems to blockbusters of the genre. We tip our caps to you and your good taste, Mr. Bacon.
