Kicking off production yesterday in Ireland, Lee Cronin's The Mummy has added Laia Costa (Newness, Devils) in a starring role alongside Midsommar‘s Jack Reynor.
Reporting the news exclusively earlier today, The Hollywood Reporter details that Costa and Reynor are playing a married couple, who along with their daughter, cross paths with the titular undead monster.
Further plot details for The Mummy are still firmly under wraps, but back in December, Cronin (most recently known for his horror hit Evil Dead Rise) teased a little of what we can expect from his upcoming take on the classic Universal Monster movie:
“This will be unlike any Mummy movie you ever laid eyeballs on before […] I’m digging deep into the earth to raise something very ancient and very frightening,”
The Mummy comes as part of Cronin's deal with New Line Cinema, with horror giants Blumhouse and James Wan's Atomic Monster producing. Cronin's Doppelgängers is also producing.
The bandaged figure of the mummy has of course had several iconic cinematic outings, including 1932's The Mummy with the iconic Boris Karloff in the lead, 1959's The Mummy from Hammer starring the legendary Christopher Lee, and of course the 1999 action-adventure classic The Mummy starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. More recent attempts, 2017's The Mummy starring Tom Cruise for one, have been less than successful, but as anyone who's seen Evil Dead Rise can attest, Cronin has the chops to resurrect the creature.
The Mummy is set for an April 17, 2026 release. Look out for more updates as they shamble in.
