What happens when you can’t tell the difference between a trip and reality? What happens when your trip might be better than reality? No one knows for sure, but the filmmakers behind Shudder’s new film MADS might have the answer, and FANGORIA is excited to debut an exclusive clip from the brand-new descent into insanity.
The ninety-minute film follows eighteen-year-old Romain, who finds himself in a strange situation out of his control when he decides to try some new drugs from his dealer for the first time. The clip picks up just after that, when he’s picked up an injured woman on the side of the road and offers to take her to the hospital. She wants to go anywhere but, it seems, as she panics as Romain drives, eventually digging an object out of his glove compartment to stab herself with, until she bleeds out in the front seat of his car.
Starring Milton Riche, Laurie Pavy, and Lucille Guillaume, the French-language film is being touted as a “one-shot descent into madness,” created in a single take as an “immersive plunge into a universe where the boundary between dream and reality blurs.” How true single take miracles are in this day and age is debatable, given all the technical trickery we can use to achieve them, but either way, it looks like MADS is set to be a thrill ride like no other as Romain tries to figure out whether he’s tripping or the world really has gone to hell.
The film is directed by David Moreau, and joins Shudder’s insane lineup of 2024 releases, which also includes In a Violent Nature, Azrael, and Late Night With the Devil, giving audiences an opportunity to see new kinds of terrifying stories on the big screen and in their homes. It also arrives just in time for their Season of Screams celebration, a three-month long event that also features the premieres of The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula season six, V/H/S/Beyond, and more.
MADS is streaming now on Shudder. Check out the exclusive clip below:
