Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) shows off his leatherface as Ed Gein in the new teaser for Monster, the latest entry into Ryan Murphy's true crime anthology series hitting Netflix on October 3.
The third season of Monster, from Murphy and Ian Brennan, subtitled The Ed Gein Story, centers on notorious killer Gein aka the “Butcher of Plainfield”, whose crimes, including exhuming corpses and allegedly fashioning furniture from dismembered body parts, served as the blueprint of of many modern horror movie villains including Psycho‘s Norman Bates, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre‘s Leatherface, The Silence of the Lambs‘ Buffalo Bill and House of 1000 Corpses‘ Firefly Family, to name but a small few.
An official plot synopsis from Netflix tells us more:
Serial killer. Grave robber. Psycho. In the frozen fields of 1950s rural Wisconsin, a friendly, mild-mannered recluse named Eddie Gein lived quietly on a decaying farm – hiding a house of horrors so gruesome it would redefine the American nightmare.
Driven by isolation, psychosis, and an all-consuming obsession with his mother, Gein's perverse crimes birthed a new kind of monster that would haunt Hollywood for decades.
Alongside Hunnam, this season of Monster stars Laurie Metcalf as Gein's mother Augusta, Tom Hollander as legendary Psycho director Alfred Hitchcock, Olivia Williams, Vicky Krieps and Addison Rae.
According to Murphy, The Ed Gein Story will continue Monster‘s tradition of asking if monsters are born, or made, with the American Horror Story co-creator musing that “I think in Ed’s case, it’s probably a little of both.” In a similar vein, The Ed Gein Storyfollows 2022's The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, starring Evan Peters as the notorious serial killer, and 2024's The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, which starred Nicholas Chavez and Cooper Koch as the Menendez brothers, convicted of killing their parents in 1989.
