From renowned author and filmmaker Kier-La Janisse (Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror), The Haunted Season is a series of chilling horror tales following the classic tradition of telling ghost stories for Christmas.

The festive new film in the horror anthology series, The Occupant of the Room is based on the classic chiller of the same name by Algernon Blackwood about a schoolteacher whose late-night arrival at a hotel in the Alps without a reservation leaves him with no option but to accept the room of a missing hotel guest, leading to a sleepless night full of strange and uncanny occurrences.

This Shudder exclusive film is available in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and Ireland.

  • Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984) on December 1

SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT (1984) (Credit: Shudder)

Little Billy witnesses his parents getting killed by Santa after being warned by his senile grandpa that Santa punishes those who are naughty. Now, Billy is 18 and out of the orphanage, and he has just become Santa himself.

Directed by Charles Edward Sellier Jr. and starring Robert Brian Wilson, Lilyan Chauvin, Gilmer McCormick, Toni Nero, and Linnea Quigley, the film horrified the public at large based on its ad campaign that featured a killer dressed as Santa Claus and the fact that it was released at Christmas. Families protested the film at theaters that screened it, and the PTA succeeded in having the film removed from release after the film was advertised on TV during family-oriented programming. The irony is that the programming of those commercials was possibly related to the fact that the director Charles Edward Sellier Jr. was the creator of The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams, a family-oriented book and television series.

The imagery of Santa climbing into the chimney of a home on Christmas night was just too much for them.

  • Reflection in a Dead Diamond on December 5

When the mysterious woman in the room next door disappears, a debonair 70-year-old ex-spy living in a luxury hotel on the Côte d’Azur is confronted by the demons and darlings of a lurid past in which moviemaking, memories, and madness collide. This is the fourth film from the directing team of Bruno Forzani and Hélène Cattet. They have received acclaim for their previous films, Amer, The Strange Colour of Your Body's Tears, and Let the Corpses Tan, which are incredibly stylish and experimental with Giallo and Spaghetti Western elements.

Basically, there is no directing team quite like Cattet and Forzani working today. Fans of their work have been waiting patiently for their next film for seven years, and they have a style all their own that hardcore cinephiles and movie fans will enjoy. The film stars Fabio Testi (The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, The Garden of the Finzi-Continis), Yannick Renier, Koen De Bouw, Maria de Medeiros (Henry and June, Pulp Fiction), and Thi Mai Nguyen.

  • Influencers on December 12

    INFLUENCERS (Credit: Shudder)

In the sun-drenched countryside of southern France, CW (Cassandra Naud) lives a quiet, idyllic life with her girlfriend Diane (Lisa Delamar), hiding a dark obsession with murder and stolen identities. When CW acts on a violent impulse, the consequences spiral out of control, and as Diane begins to suspect the truth, CW’s carefully constructed life threatens to collapse around her.

Influencers is a Shudder Original Film, directed by Kurtis David Harder, and the sequel to 2022's Influencer.

A zombie apocalypse breaks out in Brooklyn on the night of a giant warehouse party, where an eclectic group of drag queens, club kids, and frenemies must put aside their drama and use their unique skills to fight against the brain-thirsty, scrolling undead.

The award-winning feature debut from director Tina Romero stars Katy O’Brian (Love Lies Bleeding), Jaquel Spivey(Mean Girls), Tomas Matos (Fire Island), Nina West (Rupaul’s Drag Race), Quincy Dunn-Baker (No Hard Feelings), Jack Haven (I Saw the TV Glow), Cheyenne Jackson (American Horror Story), Dominique Jackson (Pose), stand-up comic Margaret Cho, Riki Lindhome (Knives Out), Eve Lindley (Dispatches From Elsewhere), Becca Blackwell (Survival of the Thickest) and Shaunette Renée Wilson (Black Panther). Queens of the Dead was the winner of the Audience Award for Best Narrative Film at the Tribeca Festival.

This Shudder exclusive is available in the United States and Canada and is wonderful. It's scary, gory, funny, and filled with heart, and has the characteristic Romero interest in social commentary, but Romero has added something new to the zombie apocalypse subgenre.
