New horror movies have blown the box office wide open over the last couple of months, prompting yet another seemingly never-ending parade of “Is Horror Back!?” and ” Could Horror Movies Save The Box Office!?” headlines. But you and I know horror remains the reigning monarch of the box office, it never went anywhere, and this is nothin’ new.
What's new are the recent original horror offerings from the likes of Curry Barker with Obsession and Kane Parsons’ viral horror sensation Backrooms. Box office records were broken, and while studios scour the internet for the next big horror sensation, we can simply enjoy the fact that as horror fans, we are eating quite well. When horror wins, we all win.
While July may not be overflowing with viral horror releases, rest assured horror movie fans will continue to be well fed as head into the thick of summer. From the latest entry in the Evil Dead franchise to a Kathryn Newton led shark horror movie, there’s plenty of new horror to enjoy this month both in theaters and at home.

Ready Or Not 2: Here I Come - Streaming July 2
Ready or Not 2: Here I Come (Credit: 20th Century Studios). One of the most iconic scream queen duos to grace the big screen lands on Hulu and Disney+ this month. Samara Weaving and Kathryn Newton play sisters trapped in a deadly game with some uber-evil, uber-rich one-percenters. Radio Silence's follow-up to Ready or Not is a bloody good time with a killer ensemble cast. Make it a Ready or Not double feature this weekend!
Ready Or Not 2: Here I Come is streaming on Hulu and Disney+ July 2.
Passenger on VOD July 7
Joseph Lopez as “The Passenger” and Lou Llobell as “Maddie" in PASSENGER (Courtesy of Paramount Pictures) June was a banner month for horror movies, with Obsession and Backrooms just absolutely bulldozing the box office. In the midst of all that joyful ruckus, André Øvredal’s Passenger was, for the most part, quietly overshadowed by those two mega-titles, and that’s a real shame because this was a fun, creepy road trip movie.
Now is your chance to check it out when Passenger rolls onto VOD July 7.
Evil Dead Burn - July 10
EVIL DEAD BURN (Credit: Warner Bros.) The much-anticipated next installment in the Evil Dead franchise hits theaters July 10. This time, French director Sébastien Vaniček (Infested) is at the helm, and he’s promised a “nasty film that hurts.” This time the story will focus on a woman seeking solace with her in-laws after the death of her husband.
As one by one they transform into deadites, she comes to discover that the vows she took in life survive even in death. Catch Evil Dead Burn on the subscriber-exclusive cover of FANGORIA #32 and read more about it in our summer issue on newsstands soon.
Obsession - Now available on Digital, coming to Blu-ray July 14
Obsession (Credit: Focus Features). Curry Barker’s mega-hit horror movie Obsession landed on VOD June 30, but if you’re holding out for a physical release, you don’t need a One Wish Willow to make that dream come true. Obsession lands on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD July 14.
If you spent the last few months in a deep cryo-sleep, Obsession follows presumably “nice guy” Bear, who makes a wish on a novelty toy to win the affection of Nikki, the object of his obsession. As it turns out, there are some dire consequences in store (which Bear refuses to accept).
Lee Cronin's The Mummy - Streaming on HBO Max July 3, Physical Media Release July 14
Lee Cronin's THE MUMMY (Credit: Warner Bros./Patrick Redmond) Open the sarcophagus, Lee Cronin’s The Mummy is streaming on HBO Max July 3 and coming to physical media July 14. Cronin’s reimagining follows a family in the wake of losing their young daughter. When she returns eight years later, it’s not the joyful homecoming they were hoping for. There is definitely something wrong with Katie. Find out what the deal is when Lee Cronin's The Mummy streams on HBO Max July 3.
Frankie, Maniac Woman on VOD July 14
Dina Silva is FRANKIE, MANIAC WOMAN (Credit: Two Witches Films) Don’t sleep on this one. Frankie, Maniac Woman is a gritty punk rock, stylish slasher that deserves more buzz. It’s Maniac meets Fight Club, proudly drawing inspiration from the likes of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, Twin Peaks (no, it’s not “Lynchian”), and all the iconic slashers we know and love, from Michael Myers to Leatherface.
The filmmakers and stars have truly built this thing from the ground up and created a really fun ride. I dare you to watch this and not root for Frankie at least a little bit. This slasher is currently sitting at 100% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
Frankie, Maniac Woman is available on digital and VOD July 14.
Her Private Hell - July 24
Sophie Thatcher in HER PRIVATE HELL (Credit: NEON) Nicolas Winding Refn's Her Private Hell stars Sophie Thatcher (Heretic, Companion, Yellowjackets). This marks Refn’s first feature since 2016’s Neon Demon, and it’s safe to say we’re pretty excited about it.
Her Private Hell follows a group of women about to make a Barbarella-style sci-fi movie as they’re hunted by a mysterious slasher known as Leather Man. Her Private Hell is in theaters July 24.
Pinocchio Unstrung - July 24
PINNOCHIO: UNSTRUNG Photo via: DAVID INCE Next up in the Twisted Childhood Universe (aka the Poohniverse) is director Rhys Frake-Waterfield’s horror take on Pinocchio. The fifth installment in the beloved childhood-character-turned-homicidal-maniacs series follows the famous wooden puppet’s journey toward becoming a real (bad) boy.
We suspect this version will be much bloodier than the one we’re used to. Bonus: The legendary Robert Englund voices Jiminy Cricket and Richard Brake plays Gepetto.
The Devil’s Mouth 7/29
THE DEVIL'S MOUTH We’re suckers for a solid shark movie and The Devil’s Mouth has a killer cast, so you know we are already seated for opening night. A group of college friends (Kathryn Newton, Lana Condor, and Gavin Casalegno) head to Thailand in search of adventure. Things turn deadly when they become trapped in submerged caves with a dangerous predator.
We’ll watch anything Kathryn Newton does, and we’re looking forward to enjoying a summer cave adventure from the safety of our couches. The Devil’s Mouth is on Prime July 29th.
Leviticus
LEVITICUS (Credit: Neon) Leviticus was a mid June release, but if you haven't had a chance to catch this one yet, I'd say get thee to the theater this weekend! Adrian Chiarella makes his feature directorial debut with a tale of two queer teens (Talk To Me’s Joe Bird and Thrash’s Stacy Clausen) in rural Australia. It’s conversion therapy horror with an It Follows twist.
We caught this one at the Overlook Film Festival, and it was emotional in a way I simply was not expecting, horrifying in ways I anticipated and in ways I could not have guessed. That is to say, Leviticus is a deeply moving feature directorial debut well worth the watch. Leviticus is still in theaters, but that probably won't last much longer, so bump this one to the top of your watchlist.
Check out our interview with Leviticus writer-director Adrian Chiarella and star Joe Bird.
I Am Frankelda
I AM FRANKELDA (Credit: Netflix) Mexico’s first sop motion feature film landed on Netflix June 12. I Am Frankelda follows a young woman as she struggles to fulfill her dream of becoming a writer in 19th-century Mexico. When her dark tales come to life, she must battle the monsters from her imagination before they consume her.
As a huge fan of good old-fashioned stop motion animation, I’m pretty excited for this one. Bonus: This is one of the rare occasions we have something on our list of recommendations you can enjoy with the fledgling horror fans (and the “I don’t watch horror movies” folks) in your life! Three cheers for “gateway horror.”
Hungry
HUNGRY (Credit: Aura Entertainment) Hungry. As in hippos. There’s a new animal attack movie on the loose and a new reason to make you more than a little trepidatious about hitting the water this summer.
Hungry follows a group of tourists on a Louisiana riverboat swamp tour. When they say yes to an excursion off the beaten path, things go very poorly for them, but pretty great for a carnage-craving audience hungry for hippo attacks.
Hungry was a late June addition to VOD, and would probably make for a killer aquatic horror double feature paired with The Devil's Mouth.
Undertone
UNDERTONE (Credit: A24). Undertone is truly one of the most unsettling movies of the year. I don’t know how this one hits at home, but I’m excited to find out. In a Dolby theater, this audio horror can at times make it feel like you’re surrounded by all manner of unseen (and unwelcome) things.
As a supporter of watching movies on the biggest screen with the biggest sound system possible, I am curious whether the Host effect of experiencing this one on a laptop with headphones would further enhance the experience. Either way, settle in with zero distractions, put your phone away, turn off all the lights, immerse yourself, and let your imagination run wild. Undertone is streaming on HBO Max.
