There are two types of horror fans in December: those who just want to snuggle up under a blanket and watch frightful holiday favorites, and those who are cramming like their life depends on it before compiling their best-of-the-year list (guilty as charged). Whichever category you fall into, there's plenty of new international horror coming to tempt you this month, including one with festive themes!
December brings Norwegian kaiju clashes, time-loop terror from the UK, blasphemous Swedish miracles—and so much more. Follow in Santa's footsteps and travel around the world this winter with these new and upcoming releases.

Troll 2 (Norway)
TROLL 2 (Credit: Netflix) Three years since its release, director Roar Uthaug's Troll remains Netflix's most-watched non-English film of all time, followed closely by last year's Under Paris. It's no surprise, then, that the platform is doubling down on these properties, with a second Under Paris film currently in development and Troll 2 available to stream as of December 1.
Not to be confused with the infamous '90s film of the same name, Uthaug's Troll 2 sees Ine Marie Wilmann, Kim S. Falck-Jørgensen, and Mads Sjøgård Pettersen reprising their roles as Nora, Andreas, and Kris, troll experts extraordinaire. When a powerful new troll is awakened, this ragtag group of heroes must seek answers in ancient Norwegian history to save their country from the brink of darkness. Based on the teasers, it looks like some troll-on-troll violence is in store!
Chainsaws Were Singing (Estonia)
CHAINSAWS WERE SINGING (Credit: Dark Star Pictures) Following its VOD release in November, bonkers Estonian horror-comedy Chainsaws Were Singing got a Blu-ray release on December 2. And did I mention it's a musical?!
Sander Maran wrote, directed, composed, edited, and colored Chainsaws Were Singing, in addition to serving as cinematographer, sound designer, and VFX artist (do you feel like an underachiever yet?). Shot guerrilla-style in 2013, the film, which is described as a “love letter to exploitation cinema,” sees a pair of new lovers separated by a psychopath with a heart—and, of course, a chainsaw.
From Darkness (Sweden)
FROM DARKNESS (Credit: Screambox) The first of three new Swedish horror films dropping on SCREAMBOX this month, Philip W. da Silva's From Darkness arrived on the streamer on December 2.
From Darkness follows park ranger Angelica (Rakel Benér) as she searches for a missing woman in a dangerous Swedish nature reserve. She's joined on the hunt by her ex, dog handler Viktor (Oscar Skagerberg), with whom Angelica shares a painful history. But their search is complicated by the legend of the cave wraith, a vengeful spirit said to have once lured miners to their death in the caves. Is the spirit real, or are they losing their minds? And what the hell happened to the missing woman?
He Kills at Night (United Kingdom)
HE KILLS AT NIGHT (Credit: 4Digital Media) Looking for a new holiday horror film to enjoy with your hot cocoa? From brothers Tom and James Pickering, who handled directing and writing duties respectively, He Kills at Night crashed onto VOD platforms on December 2.
Shot primarily in Sheffield, England, with a largely local cast and crew, He Kills at Night is set on a cold and snowy Christmas Eve. But poor visibility is the least of one traveler's problems when she is abducted by a serial killer and forced to help him flee the country. Bet that wasn't on her Christmas list.
The Wailing (Spain/Argentina/France)
THE WAILING (Credit: Film Movement) More than a year after its theatrical release in Spain and Argentina, director Pedro Martín-Calero's The Wailing was finally made available on VOD platforms in North America on December 5.
Don't let the title fool you: this isn't a remake of the superb 2016 South Korean film from Na Hong-jin. Martín-Calero's The Wailing is a non-linear psychological horror film about Andrea (Ester Expósito), a university student in Madrid whose normal life is shattered when her boyfriend is killed in a shocking act of violence.
Soon, she begins to see a mysterious entity following her every move—the same thing that happened to a woman (Mathilde Ollivier) in Buenos Aires two decades prior. A documentarian (Malena Villa) has made the connection, but no one will believe her.
Manor of Darkness (United Kingdom)
MANOR OF DARKNESS (Credit: Indie Rights) If you didn't get enough time-looping thrills from David F. Sandberg's Until Dawn adaptation earlier this year, why not hit replay on director Blake Ridder's Manor of Darkness? The film was made available on digital platforms on December 9.
The plot centers on Laura (Kim Spearman), who, struggling to care for her terminally ill mother, is convinced to reconnect with her estranged brother, Chris (Louis James), for one last score. Along with Chris's girlfriend, Lisa (Sarah Alexandra Marks), and cameraman Andy (Rui Shang), the duo pose as a documentary film crew to gain access to a remote English manor that's rumored to house a priceless artifact.
Once inside, however, they inadvertently unleash an ancient evil from a sealed chest and find themselves reliving the day over and over—with increasingly horrific results. Catch Manor of Darkness on digital platforms starting December 9… Wait, did I already say that?
In the Name of God (Sweden)
IN THE NAME OF GOD (Credit: Big Tree Entertainment) Heading back to Sweden, writer-director Ludvig Gür's In the Name of God drops on SCREAMBOX on December 23.
Linus Wahlgren plays Theodor, a priest whose wife has fallen deathly ill. When an old mentor convinces him that god has chosen him to rid the world of sinners, he commits a terrible crime—only for his wife's health to suddenly improve. With his flock now convinced that he's performed a miracle, and a disbeliever searching for answers, Theodor finds himself plunged into the depths of the occult to prove it was God's power that saved her.
True Fear (Sweden)
TRUE FEAR (Credit: Exponenta) Let's close out the year with even more Scandi scares! From director Daniel di Grado, True Fear follows Nour (Ava Nikodell) and Linn (Rebecka Enholm), two besties who host a horror-themed YouTube show together. After receiving a tip, they decide to visit the northern town of Torsåker to investigate the witch burnings that occurred there in the 17th century. Naturally, they get more than they bargained for. Sounds like their YouTube viewership is about to go up! Experience True Fear on SCREAMBOX on December 30.
