It ain't a party without Ma, and it ain't Ma without Octavia Spencer, who is officially returning for the Blumhouse sequel.
Jason Blum revealed the news of Spencer's yesterday at Blumhouse's first ever Business of Fear symposium in Hollywood, with no further details confirmed.
Released in 2019, Tate Taylor's Ma starred Spencer as the titular Sue Ann “Ma” Ellington, a seemingly lonely middle-aged woman who befriends a group of teens (Diana Silver, Gianni Paolo, McKaley Miller and Corey Fogelmanis) and lets them drink and party in her basement. Her intentions are revealed to be more sinister when events from Ma's past involving the teens' parents are unveiled.
A Ma sequel has teased as far back as 2023, when Melissa McCarthy expressed her interest in joining Spencer for another go-round of partying with Sue Ann.
A box office hit, Ma grossed $61.2 million total worldwide off a $5 million production budget, so a sequel seems like a no-brainer. Per Blum:
“Ma has proven to be a social phenomenon since its release in 2019, with fans eagerly embracing the film and Octavia’s iconic performance as Ma. Ma likes to say ‘don’t make me drink alone,’ so we’re thrilled Octavia will join us again for a second round,”
Look out or more updates on Ma 2 as we get them.
