2023 was another banner year for horror, and we've been quite spoiled in the last several years with this bountiful feast. As we reflect on our favorites from this year, we're also looking forward to some major horror releasing in 2024.
The year kicked off with original horror from Blumhouse Night Swim. Spring brought us The First Omen, and we still have so much to look forward to. This year shows no signs of slowing down when it comes to upcoming new horror movies, this summer brings M. Night Shyamalan's Trap to the big screen and in the fall we'll get to revisit the ghost with the most in Beetlejuice 2.
Here's a complete list of all the new horror movies coming out in 2024. (At the bottom of the list, you can find TBD titles and all the horror movies that have already been released this year.)
We'll keep adding more information as it comes in, this list has already grown quite a bit since December!
-
Heretic - November 8
We were lucky enough to catch this one at Fantastic Fest as a secret screening, and I will say… you're in for a treat. Beck and Woods weaponize Hugh Grant's charm to a horrifying degree. Grant is playing a cat-and-mouse game with Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East’s young missionaries, who come to preach the word of the Mormon church, only to be locked inside Mr. Reed’s home and forced to find their way out based on their faith. Worst escape room ever. Watch the Heretic trailer right here.
Black Cab - November 8
When Anne and Patrick hail a black cab after a night out their driver is chatty, jovial even, but they are in no mood to talk. In fact, the couple is barely on speaking terms. That is, until they realize the driver has no intention of taking them home. Locked in the cab with no means of escape, the driver transports the couple to a stretch of deserted and supposedly haunted road. But what is his purpose? Is he mad or just plain evil? And why has he selected Anne and Patrick as his victims?
Starring Nick Frost, Synnøve Karlsen, Luke Norris. Directed by Bruce Goodison, written by David Michael Emerson, with additional material by Nick Frost and Virginia Gilbert.
Black Cab is streaming November 8th on Shudder.
Rita - November 22nd
Rita - Photo Credit: Shudder Jayro Bustamante returns with Rita! While fleeing a neglectful household, thirteen-year-old Rita is placed in an oppressive state-run orphanage. Rita’s arrival provides a glimmer of hope to the girls inside, who share a prophecy that an angel will appear to release them. Encouraged by one another, the girls plan an escape to claim their freedom and expose the orphanage’s abuses of power. Based on the true story behind one of Guatemala’s most harrowing tragedies, RITA shines a light on the brave orphans whose fight for survival inspired a nationwide outcry for justice and reform.
Rita is streaming November 22 on Shudder.
Get Away - December 6
In Get Away, a family's vacation to a remote getaway takes an unexpected turn when they discover the island they're on is inhabited by a serial killer.
Shaun of the Dead star Nick Frost wrote and stars in this new slasher. That sentence alone was reason enough for us to be chomping at the bit to catch the world premiere at Fantastic Fest. The story centers on a family vacation to a remote getaway which takes an unexpected turn when they discover the island they’re on is inhabited by a serial killer.
The horror comedy hits all the right notes, and Frost is, of course, a delight. While most horror comedies tend to veer closer to the slasher side of subgenres, Get Away utilizes a nice little folk horror backdrop to great effect, and the ensemble cast is phenomenal across the board.
Werewolves (originally titled Year 2 )- December 6
A man (Frank Grillo) must battle his way across a town terrorized by werewolves. (Our money's on Grillo.) Directed by Steven C. Miller (Silent Night) and starring Lou Diamond Phillips, Katrina Law, and Johnathon Schaech.
Nightbitch - December 6
Based on the novel of the same name by Rachel Yoder (who also penned the screenplay), Nightbitch has been described by Heller as “a comedy for women, and a horror movie for men.”
Amy Adams plays Mother, a former city-dwelling artist and curator who chooses to stay home (now a suburban home) with her toddler son as her husband travels frequently for business. She loves her son deeply, but that does not prevent her from feeling isolated and exhausted. How did her life become a numbing grind of diaper changes and cutting bananas into little pieces? Still unstrung from an extremely unsuccessful attempt to connect with other mothers at the library’s Baby Book Time, and unable to keep her emotions bottled up inside any longer, Mother begins to see and hear things in the night that beckon to her. Soon, something primal and feral rises up within her, allowing her to unleash — and return to — her inner power and identity.
Nosferatu - December 25
NOSFERATU (Credit: IMDB) Nosferatu stars Bill Skarsgård (as the blood-sucking Count Orlok), Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney and Willem Dafoe.
Focus Features describes Eggers' remake as “a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake.”
We've been teased, our appetites have been whetted, and we are ready to spend Christmas 2024 with this blood-sucking beast.
Jordan Peele’s Fourth Film - TBD
NOPE (2022) Update: No sooner had we published this list than Universal removed Peele's untitled fourth film from their 2024 roster. Originally slated for a Christmas Day release, the plot thickens as now we don't know when this mystery movie will hit theater screens.
The official IMDB title is “Untitled Fourth Film Directed by Jordan Peele,” and the official IMDB synopsis is “Plot kept under wraps.”
But it's classified as a horror/mystery/thriller and that's got us pretty dang excited.
Return To Silent Hill — TBD
Update: IMDB previously had a release date of April 26, but that has since been replaced with a more general 2024 release.
Pyramid Head will be making a long-awaited triumphant return very soon! Director Christopher Gans has also confirmed that the film will feature “a few nods to P.T.,” referencing the ill-fated but utterly terrifying playable teaser for Hideo Kojima's scrapped Silent Hills.
The film will follow James (Irvine), a man broken after being separated from his one true love (Jigsaw‘s Hannah Emily Anderson). When a mysterious letter calls him back to Silent Hill in search of her, he finds a once-recognizable town transformed by an unknown evil.
As James descends deeper into the darkness, he encounters terrifying figures, both familiar and new, and begins to question his own sanity as he struggles to make sense of reality and hold on long enough to save his lost love.
When will we finally be able to Return to Silent Hill? We aren't exactly sure, but keeping our fingers crossed for an early 2024 release.
2024 Release Dates TBD
These titles don't have solid release dates yet, but they will allegedly be landing at some point in 2024, and we'll update as those release dates are announced!

New Horror Movies Released Earlier This Year
Night Swim - Jan 5
The first major horror release of 2024 hails from Blumhouse. Our very own Scott Wampler sums it up rather nicely, “from the looks of things, this creepy aquatic tale may very well do for swimming pools what Steven Spielberg's Jaws once did for the ocean.”
Based on the acclaimed 2014 short film by Rod Blackhurst and Bryce McGuire, the film stars Wyatt Russell (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) as Ray Waller, a former major league baseball player forced into early retirement by a degenerative illness, who moves into a new home with his concerned wife Eve (Oscar nominee Kerry Condon, The Banshees of Inisherin), teenage daughter Izzy (Amélie Hoeferle, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes) and young son Elliot (Gavin Warren, Fear the Walking Dead).
Secretly hoping, against the odds, to return to pro ball, Ray persuades Eve that the new home’s shimmering backyard swimming pool will be fun for the kids and provide physical therapy for him. But a dark secret in the home’s past will unleash a malevolent force that will drag the family under, into the depths of inescapable terror.
You can now watch Night Swim at home, pair it with our pool water punch recipe.
Destroy All Neighbors — January 12
William Brown (Jonah Ray Rodrigues), a neurotic, self-absorbed musician determined to finish his prog-rock magnum opus, faces a creative roadblock in the form of a noisy and grotesque neighbor named Vlad (Alex Winter). Finally working up the nerve to demand that Vlad keep it down, William inadvertently decapitates him.
But, while attempting to cover up one murder, William’s accidental reign of terror causes victims to pile up and become undead corpses who torment and create more bloody detours on his road to prog-rock Valhalla.
Destroy All Neighbors is a twisted splatter-comedy about a deranged journey of self-discovery full of goopy practical FX, a well-known ensemble cast, and LOTS of blood.
Stream Destroy All Neighbors exclusively on Shudder January 12.
True Detective: Night Country — January 14
Image courtesy of Max Ok, this one isn't a movie, but it absolutely needs to be on your radar. There's a reason folks are already raving about the fourth season of True Detective and widely calling it the best season since the first. Issa López takes the helm as writer and director and steers us into the arctic for a horror story that masterfully fits into the world of True Detective, while also making it wholly her own.
Jodie Foster and Kali Reis star as local law enforcement officials at odds with one another, and pretty much everything and everyone around them. With nods to snowy classics like The Thing, López crafts a mystery in the dark, and trust me when I say this season is an absolute feast for horror fans.
True Detective: Night Country premieres on HBO Max and is also streaming on Max Sunday, January 14 at 9 p.m. ET and PT. Stay tuned for our cast interviews from the True Detective red carpet premiere.
Dario Argento Panico - February 2
The legendary director gets the documentary treatment. What's special about this is that Argento himself takes part in the film, along with an impressive list of interviewees includes Asia Argento, Fiore Argento, Nicolas Winding Refn, Gaspar Noè, Guillermo Del Toro, Michel Savia and Lamberto Bava. Here's the official synopsis:
“In the secluded ambiance of hotel rooms, Dario Argento crafted his greatest cinematic creations, seeking solace from the outside world to delve into his nightmares.
Now, he finds himself in a hotel room to return to the very setting that ignited his creative fervor to conclude his latest script and participate in an intimate interview, all while being followed by a film crew documenting his life for a movie about his illustrious career.”
Dario Argento Panico is streaming on Shudder February 2
Lisa Frankenstein — February 9
Diablo Cody penned this neon horror-comedy set in the '80s, starring Freaky‘s Kathryn Newton and Riverdale‘s Cole Sprouse, and we are pretty fuckin excited about it. Nothing says Valentine's Day plans like a little teenage necromancy.
Liza Soberano, Henry Eikenberry, Joe Chrest and Carla Gugino round out this stellar coming of RAGE love story about a misunderstood teenager and her high school crush, who happens to be a handsome corpse.
After a set of playfully horrific circumstances bring him back to life, the two embark on a murderous journey to find love, happiness… and a few missing body parts along the way.
Watch the Lisa Frankenstein trailer, and check out our interview with costume designer Meagan McLaughlin and our sit-down interview with Lisa Frankenstein stars Kathryn Newton and Cole Sprouse.

Terrifying sounds suggest something monstrous at large in this landscape, something that could kill or steal them away. As relationships in the group fracture, the determination of one young woman reveals the terrible actions taken to survive.

One such member, Alegre Dyer, breaks out of political prison and reunites with her husband Ron and daughter Daria. On the run from the militia, the family takes shelter in a remote safe house.

Late Night With The Devil - March 22
Late Night with the Devil has been an incredibly popular film on the fest circuit.
We’ve been tracking this one for a bit, in no small part because filmmakers Cameron and Colin Cairnes (100 Bloody Acres) claim to have gotten the idea to cast Dastmalchian after reading his love letter to late-night horror hosts in issue #11 of FANGORIA.
The film finds 1970s talk show host Jack Delroy (David Dastmalchian) on his last legs, wrung out by personal tragedy and in need of a ratings win.
His plan to feature as a guest a young girl who is allegedly possessed seems like a Halloween night layup… until the cameras roll and all hell literally breaks loose.
Late Night With The Devil is in theaters March 22 and streaming on Shudder April 19.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire - March 22
The Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire cast is, as you may have already heard, sprawling, and includes Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, Paul Rudd, Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, James Acaster, Emily Alyn Lind, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Celeste O'Connor, Logan Kim, Annie Potts, and – last, but certainly not least – the great Carrie Coon.
The film centers on the Spengler family as they return to where it all started – the iconic New York City firehouse – to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who’ve developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level.
But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is in theaters March 22.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire - March 29
Regardless of how you pronounce it, Godzilla x Kong is gonna' rule. Serving as a sequel to 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong, but this time the two iconic monsters are no longer at odds with one another.
“Pitting the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence – and our own.
The epic new film will delve further into the histories of these Titans, their origins, and the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever.”
The First Omen - April 5
When a young American woman is sent to Rome to begin a life of service to the church, she encounters a darkness that causes her to question her own faith and uncovers a terrifying conspiracy that hopes to bring about the birth of evil incarnate.
Directed by Arkasha Stevenson, the current plot synopsis doesn't give much away, but if this is a prequel to The Omen and the story revolves around a young woman attempting to stop “the birth of evil incarnate,” we can probably extrapolate out some assumptions about how The First Omen plays out.
Check out our interview with the filmmakers to find out why The First Omen had to battle an NC-17 rating.
Baghead — April 5
Initially, we didn't have much information on the upcoming Baghead, aside from a cool trailer and a January 26 UK release date. We finally have domestic release info and a proper synopsis! Night Swim director Bryce McGuire is one of the writers on this one, which follows a young woman who inherits a run-down pub and discovers a dark secret within its basement. Check out the full synopsis below, and keep an eye out for our Baghead-inspired Cursed Currywurst recipe to pair with your viewing.
Following the death of her estranged father (Peter Mullan), Iris (Freya Allan) learns she has inherited a run-down, centuries-old pub. She travels to Berlin to identify her father’s body and meet with The Solicitor (Ned Dennehy) to discuss the estate. When the deed is signed, becomes inextricably tied to an unspeakable entity that resides in the pub’s basement–Baghead–a shape-shifting creature that can transform into the dead.
Two thousand in cash for two minutes with the creature is all it takes for desperate loved ones to ease their grief. Iris is tempted to exploit the creature’s powers and help desperate people for a price. But she soon discovers breaking the two-minute rule can have terrifying consequences.
Baghead will be streaming on Shudder and AMC+ April 5.

Arcadian - April 12
Nicolas Cage comes back to save the day – and his children – from ferocious creatures at their remote (of course) farmhouse. Arcadian recently had its world premiere at SXSW and will be hitting theaters in April.
Watch Nic Cage battle monsters in the Arcadian trailer.
Abigail — April 19
Update: We finally have a title for what we've been referring to as Radio Silence Untitled Monster Movie. And as catchy as that is, we sure are glad to get both a title and a trailer for Abigail.
The mystery plot is finally revealed, and we are getting a child vampire ballerina. Back in May, we shared a tad bit more info as to what the plot might be, “Plot details are being kept in the trunk of a car, but the project was at one point titled Dracula’s Daughter. That project centered on a group of kidnappers who abduct a band of young people, one of whom ends up being the titular character. Woe then betides the kidnappers.”
Now we have the official synopsis:
After a group of would-be criminals kidnap the 12-year-old ballerina daughter of a powerful underworld figure, all they have to do to collect a $50 million ransom is watch the girl overnight. In an isolated mansion, the captors start to dwindle, one by one, and they discover, to their mounting horror, that they’re locked inside with no normal little girl.
Hell yeah, we can't wait! Abigail is in theaters April 19 and on our FANGORIA #23 newsstand cover.

Handling The Undead - June 7
Bahar Pars appears in Handling the Undead by Thea Hvinstendahl, an official selection of the World Dramatic Competition at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. Courtesy of Sundance Institute. Photo by Pål Ulvik Rokseth. Handling The Undead is a deep meditation on grief and the aftermath of loss. While this isn't a straight-up horror film per se, there are some great horror moments, and the overall premise of the movie is about the most horrific thing that exists — the loss of a loved one. If you want to get into existential dread, this one's for you.
On a hot summer day in Oslo, the dead mysteriously awaken, and three families are thrown into chaos when their deceased loved ones come back to them. Who are they, and what do they want? A family is faced with the mother’s reawakening before they have even mourned her death after a car accident; an elderly woman gets the love of her life back the same day she has buried her; a grandfather rescues his grandchild from the gravesite in a desperate attempt to get his daughter out of her depression.
Described as “a drama with elements of horror,” the story follows three families and centers on grief and loss, but it's about hope and understanding what we can’t comprehend or control.
Directed by Thea Hvistendahl and written by John Ajvide in collaboration with Thea Hvistendahl. Handling The Undead is exclusively at the IFC Center in New York on May 31, expanding in Select Cities on June 7.

A Quiet Place: Day One -June 28
Fans of the Quiet Place universe can (silently) celebrate because the prequel is almost here! Some new faces we'll be seeing include Lupita Nyong’o, Joseph Quinn, Alex Wolff, Djimon Hounsou and Denis O’Hare.
The franchise spinoff is written and directed by Michael Sarnoski (Pig), and deviates from the Abbott family story. Krasinski shared with Deadline that the prequel will follow Nyong’o's character in New York and “takes us back to where it all began.”

We finally have a blatant Longlegs trailer, and our curiosity only continues to bubble over.
Oddity - July 19
A quick personal anecdote on this one: I started this movie late one night, and very quickly decided I needed to wait and try again in the morning because it was creeping me the hell out. That is to say, I very much enjoyed it.
When Dani is brutally murdered at the remote country house that she and her husband Ted are renovating, everyone suspects a patient from the local mental health institution, where Ted is a doctor.
However, soon after the tragic killing, the suspect is found dead. Trap - August 2
April brought us the first trailer for M. Night Shyamalan‘s upcoming new horror movie Trap. It's hitting theaters August 9, and until that trailer drop, we didn't know much aside from the cast includes Josh Hartnett and Hayley Mills, which is exciting enough in itself.
Now we know the plot of Trap involves a man attending a concert with his daughter where something sinister is set to occur. The trailer gives more than that, but you can watch the Trap trailer here if you want some more details! And although some folks say the trailer gives too much away, we know there's no way an M. Night Shyamalan movie is giving it up that easy!
Previously scheduled for August 2, M. Night Shyamalan's Trap was moved to an August 9 release date. It has since moved again, one week earlier. Trap will now be in theaters August 2. Probably. Most likely.
Cuckoo - August 9
Tilman Singer's CUCKOO We first heard about Cuckoo nearly two years ago when we brought you a first look still at Cuckoo star Hunter Schafer, with hardly any word on it since. After premiering at SXSW this year we got an initial May 3 theatrical announcement, which was then pushed to August 2, and the latest is that it will now be in theaters August 9th. But at least we finally have some plot details and the first official Cuckoo trailer.
“On a trip to the German Alps with her father and stepmother, Gretchen discovers that the resort town where they’re staying hides sinister secrets, as she’s plagued by strange noises and frightening visions of a woman pursuing her.”
Written and directed by German filmmaker Tilman Singer (Luz), Cuckoo also stars Dan Stevens (The Guest), Jessica Henwick (Game of Thrones), Marton Csókás (Freelance), Greta Fernández (Santo) and Jan Bluthardt (Luz).
The latest is that Cuckoo will be in theaters August 9.
Alien: Romulus August 16
Officially, this one is currently being referred to as “Untitled Alien Event Movie.” Unofficially (and on IMDB), it's been referred to as Alien: Romulus. Whatever the final title ends up being, we know for certain the star of the movie, Cailee Spaeny revealed in an interview with Variety that this installment is “supposed to slot in between the first movie and the second movie” from the original Alien franchise.
Starring alongside Spaeny are Isabela Merced, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu. So far, the details of the standalone story remain tightly under wraps, but with a whole fifty-seven years of plot time to play with, it really could go anywhere.

In the Adams Family's celebration of the classic creature-feature, an American-led fracking crew working deep in the Serbian wilderness find themselves at odds with government assigned environmental advisors. After lots of rumors and false starts, Beetlejuice 2 wrapped in November. It's a real movie and we get to see it in 2024. We learned the official title on this one is Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and we even have a Beetlejuice Beetlejuice trailer and plot!
As Scott Wampler notes, “We don't know much about Beetlejuice 2 (though we can say with certainty that it won't be Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian, another iteration of this sequel that almost got made once upon a time), but the few things we do know are intriguing: for one thing, Beetlejuice will have a wife, played by Monica Bellucci.
We also know that Jenna Ortega will be playing the daughter of Winona Ryder's Lydia Deetz, and that Willem Dafoe is playing a former B-movie action star who's now working as a detective in the afterlife. How any of this fits together is anyone's guess, but we're admittedly very curious to find out.
In addition to the names mentioned above, Beetlejuice 2 will also star Catherine O'Hara and Justin Theroux. Here's everything we know so far about Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

SPEAK NO EVIL (2022) Update: Originally slated for an August 9 release, Speak No Evil moves to Friday, September 13th. Universal also has “Untitled Blumhouse Productions Film” on the calendar for the same date, we'll keep them both on here for now, but they very well could be one and the same!
Speak No Evil was certainly one of the most brutal movies of 2022. As a matter of fact, it was one of the more brutal offerings in recent memory.
An American remake is on the way, starring James McAvoy and directed by Eden Lake‘s James Watkins from Christian and Mad Tafdrup's original screenplay. Just in case you've forgotten the synopsis of Speak No Evil (and it isn't seared into your nightmares like it is for us), in the original 2022 movie, a Danish family visits a Dutch family they met on a holiday.

The Substance - September 20th
Coralie Fargeat's THE SUBSTANCE I'm going to be honest. I did not expect a Cannes Best Screenplay winner to go this hard on the horror front. Folks have compared this to Death Becomes Her, it's a fair parallel. I won't tell you which movie it actually has the most in common with because I'd love for you to be as blindsided as I was. You'll have your chance when TheSubstance hits theaters on September 20th. Coralie Fargeat and the whole cast are firing on all cylinders here. What's The Substance about? Here's the official synopsis:
Starring Demi Moore as Elisabeth Sparkle, a former A-lister past her prime and suddenly fired from her fitness TV show by repellent studio head Harvey (Dennis Quaid). All it takes is one injection and she is reborn – temporarily – as the gorgeous, twentysomething Sue (Margaret Qualley). The only rule?
