Is twenty-two years long enough to wait before remaking a film? It seems so, as Variety reports that David Fincher’s 2002 thriller Panic Room, starring Jodie Foster and Kristen Stewart, is set to be remade by Brazilian production company Floresta, who previously adapted popular reality series like Top Chef and Shark Tank for Brazilian television.
The remake is set to be directed by Gabriela Amaral Almeida, and will star Brazilian actress Isis Valverde in the role originally played by Foster: a mother trying to protect her daughter from a home invasion. The plot of the remake will be largely the same as the original, following a “recently widowed woman and her young daughter as they seek refuge in a secret panic room after burglars invade their home. What they don’t know is that the intruders are after something hidden in the very room in which they’ve locked themselves.”
“Besides an extremely current plot, we developed an electrifying thriller that also brings an important ethical discussion,” Floresta’s Artistic Director Thiago Teitelroit said to Variety. “The story, an IP of Sony, aligned with what we were looking for: a product that allows great performances from the cast and direction in a narrative capable of appealing to a wide audience.”
“2024 has been a challenging yet generous year for me, full of possibilities, plans, and projects finally getting off the drawing board,” star Valverde also said. “Ending this year with such great news is incredible. Being chosen to play this role is an honor, as is sharing the set with Gabriela Amaral, a truly unique director and a wonderful team. I hope to deliver a performance full of colors that overflows the screen.”
The announcement coincides with the release of the original film, which also features Forest Whitaker, Dwight Yoakam, and Jared Leto, on 4K Ultra HD next year, courtesy of Sony Pictures. The new release, which hits shelves in February, will feature a new 4K restoration of the film, as well as special making-of featurettes and audio commentary from Fincher, writer David Koepp, and stars Foster, Whitaker, and Yoakam.
Panic Room is currently available to stream on Max. A release date for the Brazilian remake has not been announced.
