NEON are once again nailing the mysterious and terrifying marketing for another of their much-anticipated horrors (see also: Longlegs, Cuckoo, Immaculate), with a new teaser for Steven Soderbergh's Presence dropping today.
The teaser also reveals that Presence will be released in select theaters on January 17, going wide on January 24.
Starring Lucy Liu, Chris Sullivan, Callina Liang, Julia Fox, Eddy Maday and West Mulholland, Presence was written by David Koepp (Jurassic Park, the upcoming untitled Jurassic World movie), and follows:
“In Presence, a family moves into a suburban house and becomes convinced they are not alone. A supernatural force has infiltrated the house, and taken a specific interest in the couple’s daughter. The picture is shot entirely in a single location, which creates the haunting mood sought by the filmmakers.”
What makes Presence different than just another classic ghost story (although we certainly wouldn't be opposed to that either), is that Soderbergh has taken the unique approach by making the entire film from the POV of the ghost itself, so we get a front row seat to the haunting.
The film premiered at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, where it even saw walkouts due to some of its intense scenes.
Today's new teaser really doesn't show a whole lot which honestly makes it a whole lot creepier, and is a technique clearly working wonders for NEON. A slow pan in on an all-American house in the suburbs, a droning soundscape and some cryptic messaging about secrets? Pay attention, other studios: keeping things simple is sometimes the best way to go.
Catch Presence in theaters in January, and we'll bring you more creepy updates as they roll in.
