Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, aka Radio Silence (Scream, Abigail, Ready or Not), are eyeing their next project at 20th Century Studios – a feature adaptation of the long-running interactive book series, Choose Your Own Adventure.
While we're not sure exactly what form this intriguing new project will take plot-wise, Deadline reports today that Radio Silence will produce and direct from a script by Tom Bissell (Andor, The Disaster Artist).
For the unfamiliar, the Choose Your Own Adventure universe, as Deadline so eloquently puts it, comprises a series of “gamebooks,” nonlinear, replayable, and user-directed stories, in which readers are the hero and decide how the story ends. Written in second person, the genre-spanning series started in 1979 with Edward Packard's The Cave of Time. A number of high-profile franchises, including Star Wars and Indiana Jones have been given the Choose Your Own Adventure treatment, while horror fans will probably recall R.L. Stine's Give Yourself Goosebumps books which follow a similar format.
Back in 2018, Netflix's Black Mirror: Bandersnatch gave viewers the chance to make decisions for its characters, with a number of different potential paths (one trillion, apparently), meaning no two audiences had the same storytelling experience. How exactly this might work on the big screen remains to be seen.
Ahead of Choose Your Own Adventure, Radio Silence is currently in production on The Mummy 4 (title TBA), with original stars Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz returning for another round of creature feature madness. This year's Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, starring Samara Weaving and Kathryn Newton, held its own against stiff box office competition.
Look out for more on Radio Silence's mysterious new Choose Your Own Adventure movie as we get it.
