Ridley Scott Has A New ALIEN Movie In Development

Details are scarce, but could the director finally be finishing up his 'David Trilogy'?
ALIEN: COVENANT (2017)

Alien: Romulus breaking records with a sequel in development, FX's Alien: Earth en route, an Alien: Isolation sequel confirmed and a potential new Alien vs. Predator in the future… Xenomorph fans were already feasting on good news this year and today brings even more – Ridley Scott is reportedly developing another new Alien movie.

The details, from a brand new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, are short and sweet, with the article simply reading that Scott is “developing a new Alien movie for [20th Century Studios] in the wake of Romulus’ success.” What exactly this could mean is still up for debate.

Perhaps Scott was referring to his involvement with Fede Alvarez's upcoming Alien: Romulus sequel (where he could be returning to executive produce, or more), but the wording here seems to suggest this is Scott's project alone.

One option could of course be that Scott is finally finishing off his so-called ‘David trilogy', which started with 2012's Prometheus and followed up with 2017's Alien: Covenant. Referred to by fans as such due to Michael Fassbender's android David playing a pivotal part in both movies, the idea of sequel to the divisive pair has long been floated around.

Scott himself has always been on board to carry on this particular story, and has teased that a Covenant sequel could lead directly into the events of 1979's original Alien. Scott has also never turned down the idea of bringing back Sigourney Weaver as Ripley, and the actress herself hasn't ruled it out either.

It seemed after Alien: Covenant‘s disappointing run at the box office that the sequel may never come to be, but thanks to Alien: Romulus' huge financial success (the sci-fi horror racked up $350 million at the global box office), it looks like the studio might have changed its mind on letting Scott take the reigns on his story once again.

Another option could of course be an entirely new story set in the Alien universe. Scott has previously been keen to establish that he has no plans to let the Alien series stop, saying (in his typical lovable blunt fashion) that “If you really want a franchise, I can keep cranking it for another six. I'm not going to close it down again. No way.” Maybe he has plans for an entirely new Alien storyline that could become its own spin-off franchise.

Whatever the case, it's just hugely exciting news to have Scott on board for wherever the Alien franchise is heading. And rest assured, we'll bring you any and all updates as we get them.
