Given how gory some of the original Grimm Brothers’ fairy tales are, it makes sense that many of them have been turned into horror films over the years. There’s only a thin line separating Disney’s idea of a happily ever after and complete despair, and Miracle Media’s crossed that line for good with the new trailer for Rumplestiltskin, based on the folk tale of the same name.
The age-old fairy tale of the imp who wants to steal away a woman’s child in exchange for fame and fortune was already terrifying to grow up with, but the new film, starring Hannah Baxter-Eve, Joss Carter, Adrian Bouchet, Colin Malone, Chris Mills, and Mark Cook takes things one step further when, after the young woman successfully defeated Rumplestiltskin, he returns with a vengeance, kidnapping her son and leaving her to once more face off against the force of darkness.
Miracle Media (per Bloody Disgusting’s exclusive premiere of the trailer today), said of the film, “The film breathes new life into the age-old children’s story, with eye-popping, gnarly special effects and a potty mouthed female protagonist who isn’t your typical damsel in distress. With bawdy humour and devilishly delightful visuals, this new incarnation certainly packs a punch and is sure to permeate your dreams with nightmare fuel.”
The film is written and directed by Andy Edwards, who produces the film with Becca Hirani, and is set to make its world premiere at Pigeon Shrine FrightFest in Glasgow this Saturday, March 8th. But it’s not the first time a filmmaker has tackled the legend of a child-stealing imp — it was also adapted into a film in 1995 (also titled Rumplestiltskin), which featured Max Grodénchik as the title character and was directed by Mark Jones, the man behind the first two Leprechaun films.
