Ryan Kiera Armstrong is officially the new Chosen One, with Sarah Michelle Gellar herself helping to announce that the Star Wars: Skeleton Crew will lead Hulu's upcoming Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot.
As previously reported, Oscar winner Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals) is set to direct and produce the Buffy reboot, with Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman (Poker Face) attached to write, showrun, and executive produce.
As well as executive producing, original series lead Gellar is reprising her titular role as a recurring guest star.
Gellar, who shared the news via her official Instagram account earlier today (scroll down for the adorable video) had this to say of Armstrong's casting:
“From the moment I saw Ryan’s audition, I knew there was only one girl that I wanted by my side […] To have that kind of emotional intelligence, and talent, at such a young age is truly gift. The bonus is that her smile lights up even the darkest room.”
Nora and Lilla Zuckerman add:
“We are so overjoyed to have found this generation’s slayer in Ryan Kiera Armstrong. She absolutely blew us away — there is no question in our mind that she is the chosen one.”
When confirming the good news to Armstrong, Gellar tells her new co-star “Welcome to New Sunnydale” which sounds like it could be a title, but The Hollywood Reporter note that Hulu are still referring to the series as “Untitled Buffyverse Pilot”, which could suggest more Buffy spin-offs are in the works.
