Sarah Michelle Gellar Now Says ‘Maybe’ To BUFFY Reboot

The star had previously turned down a return to the legendary vampire series.

She may not be returning for the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot, but Sarah Michelle Gellar has sparked new hope for returning for another of her most iconic roles, by saying she is ‘maybe' open to a reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

During her recent appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Gellar, who played legendary vampire slayer Buffy Summers from 1997 to 2003, said recent developments in the world of television have changed her mind on potentially revamping the series:

“It’s funny. I always used to say no, because it’s in its bubble, and it’s so perfect […] But watching Sex and the City [sequel series, And Just Like That] and seeing Dexter [Orignal Sin], and realizing there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe.'”

Previously, Gellar has said she was “too tired and cranky” to return as Summers, and even went further to say that a reboot of the show would be unnecessary, with her at the helm at least.

Continuing to Barrymore, Gellar spoke about how a new Buffy wouldn't necessarily have to be a completely faithful prequel or sequel:

“It could be anything […] It’s a universe. And it makes you realize that in this world, we need those heroes, I think, more so than ever.”

Another Gellar-starring series, Scream, proved that reboots of classic horror franchises can be done successfully, so it's no surprise that Gellar seems to have had a change of heart. After all, there's no shortage of ways to bring her character back, whether as the ass-kicker we all know and love or as a mentor for a new Slayer.

A planned reboot of Buffy has been talked about since 2018, with Monica Owusu-Breen at the helm alongside series creator Joss Whedon. Earlier this year, country music legend Dolly Parton, who was a producer on the original series, revealed that producers were “still working on” bringing the series back for a new generation.

Whatever the future holds for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, best believe we'll be watching with great interest, and will bring you any and all updates as we get them.
