Between Takashi Yamazaki's Godzilla Minus One, its upcoming sequel, upcoming Godzilla video games and LEGO sets and Alamo Drafthouse Cinema's recently announced kaiju-themed theater, it's a great time to be a fan of the king of the monsters – and it could be about to get better, as a sequel to 2016's Shin Godzilla may well be in the works at Toho.

Per a new article from Bloomberg, Toho’s international head Koji Ueda confirmed that Toho is planning a potential sequel to Shin Godzilla, but nothing seems is set in stone just yet. Ueda also mentioned a “still-untitled Southeast Asia-focused project”, which aligns with the visuals in the recent 70 years anniversary celebration video that shows the kaiju king showing off some brand new neon green atomic breath.

Directed by Hideaki Anno (Neon Genesis Evangelion) and Shinji Higuchi (Shin Ultraman), Shin Godzilla stars Hiroki Hasegawa, Yutaka Takenouchi and Satomi Ishihara, with a supporting cast of many key Japanese genre players including Shin'ya Tsukamoto and Jun Kunimura, as politicians dealing with the bureaucratic red tape that comes when a giant monster appears off the coast of Tokyo. Upon release, Shin Godzilla grossed $79 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing Japanese-produced Godzilla film in the franchise’s history until the Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One came along in 2023.

The news of a potential Shin Godzilla sequel also lines up with GKIDS' upcoming 4K restoration of the kaiju epic, which is stomping into U.S. theaters from August 14.

That's everything we know about Shin Godzilla 2 for now – stay tuned for updates. For more kaiju news, here's what we know about the next chapter in the MonsterVerse, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova.
