We’ve all had the dream about what would happen if our imaginary friends came to life, right? Sure, it’s cute if the stuff you draw in your school notebooks is a magic bunny or a superhero, but what if they’re nasty creatures bent on destruction? That’s the idea behind Sketch, and FANGORIA is excited to debut an exclusive clip from the upcoming film.
Written and directed by Seth Worley, Sketch stars Tony Hale and D’Arcy Carden as siblings raising a little girl whose drawings come to life and escape her sketchbook. When they begin to terrorize the world around her, it’s up to the family to work together and save the day. The film also stars Bianca Belle, Kue Lawrence, and Kalon Cox, with Hale producing alongside Steve Taylor, Kevin Downes, Daryl Lefever, Dusty Brown, and Katelyn Botsch.
The clip reads a bit like a horror version of John Krasinski’s IF, with a little boy approached by a squat monster who looks like he’s made of something like paper, but a bit more gruesome. When the goofy-looking thing makes an eerie noise, the boy tries to shoo it, only for the creature to explode into an alarm-like sound, alerting a massive, eyeless creature. Quickly realizing that he’s prey for the beast, the boy’s mercifully saved by two other kids, one of whom unceremoniously drowns the smaller creature until it dissolves into nothing – what a fate.
Sketch isn’t Hale’s first dip into the horror scene. He also recently starred in Opus, Mark Anthony Green’s thriller film starring Ayo Edebiri about a cult of celebrity, as well as Woman of the Hour, the Netflix film based on the real crimes of Rodney Alcala. Carden most recently appeared in Season 6 of The Handmaid’s Tale, the dystopian Hulu series based on Margaret Atwood’s seminal novel.
Sketch hits theaters on August 6. Check out the exclusive clip below:
