Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried are set to star in Lionsgate's adaptation of The Housemaid, based on the bestselling novel by Freida McFadden and directed by Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, Ghostbusters).

Deadline, who reported the news exclusively earlier today, describe a basic outline of The Housemaid:

In the film, Sweeney will play Millie, a struggling woman who is relieved to get a fresh start as a housemaid to Nina (Seyfried) and Andrew, an upscale, wealthy couple. She soon learns that the family’s secrets are far more dangerous than her own.

McFadden's novel and source material was released in 2022 and became a bonafide literary hit, securing a place on the New York Times bestseller list for more than a year, 75 weeks and counting, and on the Amazon bestsellers list for 98 weeks and counting.

Deadline also remind that has a record-breaking half-billion pages read on Kindle and is the No. 2 most-read title for Kindle’s 10th anniversary. It has sold more then 3.6 million copies in English has been translated into 40 languages.

The Housemaid casting is the cherry on top of an excellent year for Sweeney, who wowed horror fans with her turn in Michael Mohan's Immaculate, which she also produced. Seyfried is also no stranger to the genre game, having starred in Karyn Kusama's iconic Jennifer's Body, and more recent horror turns in You Should Have Left and Things Heard & Seen.

Erin Westerman, co-president of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, had this to say about the pair's casting:

“Part of the fun of the book was imagining the cast while we read it, and Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried are perfect for Millie and Nina – they’re both mysterious, nuanced, and incredibly skilled at becoming characters who don’t reveal everything right away […] We’re thrilled to team them with Paul Feig, who we worked with on A Simple Favor and its upcoming sequel and has a proven track record of developing stories with dynamic female leads.”

Not only will Seyfried and Sweeney star, the pair will also executive produce alongside Alex Young and McFadden. Hidden Pictures’ Todd Lieberman will produce, and the company’s Carly Kleinbart Elter will oversee the project. Feigco’s Feig and Laura Fischer are also producing.
