One of horror’s most bizarre and satirical cult classics, Brian Yuzna’s Society is the subject of an eye-opening new documentary, The Darkside of Society – and we’ve got an exclusive trailer reveal today.
Set for release May 13, 2025 through Uncork’d Entertainment, The Darkside of Society comes from director Larry Wade Carrell (Girl Next, The Quantum Devil) and explores the real-life events that fueled the film’s infamous surrealism, with rare behind-the-scenes insight and never-before-heard accounts.
Following its world premiere at Sitges and a screening at London’s FrightFest, The Darkside of Society has been sparking major conversations between genre fans, as writer Zeph E. Daniel (formerly Woody Keith) candidly opens up about what inspired his story for the first time.
Made in 1989 but released in 1992, Yuzna’s directorial debut (after producing Stuart Gordon’s sci-fi horror classics Re-Animator and From Beyond) follows a young man named Bill (Billy Warlock) who begins to suspect there’s something seriously wrong with his wealthy Beverly Hills family. What he discovers is far more bizarre than he ever expected, leading to a climax involving a perverse body-horror ritual called “shunting,” with memorable makeup effects by Screaming Mad George.
