Valentine's Day is about to get a whole lot creepier, as Elric Kane's The Dead Thing hits Shudder on Febuary 14. Check out the brand new trailer below.
Starring Blu Hunt (The New Mutants) and Ben Smith-Petersen (Mad Max: Fury Road), The Dead Thing was co-written by Webb Wilcoxen and follows:
Alex (Hunt) is trapped in a downward spiral of shallow hookups and tepid connections, but she is caught off guard when her dating app swipes lead her into the arms of a mysterious, charming young man Kyle (Smith-Petersen).
Despite their passionate night, when the sun rises, the mystery man is nowhere to be found. Alex then sets out to find the one person who made her feel alive. Through her investigation, she reconnects with Kyle, but also digs up a ghastly supernatural secret. The pair quickly descend into a whirlwind of obsession, dependence, lust, and infatuation that has grave consequences.
The Dead Thing had its U.S. premiere at Brooklyn Horror Film Festival last year, after playing London's FrightFest and Fantasia earlier this in 2024.
In a new interview with People, who exclusively debuted today's new trailer, Kane, who co-hosts FANGORIA's own Colors of the Dark podcast alongside Dr. Rebekah McKendry, talks about his inspiration behind the romantic horror:
“I worked in the very office the film is set in and a co-worker was always recounting her many adventures of online dating and the various apps and strange encounters she had […] It sounded exhausting but I wrote down a note on my phone ‘Internet Dating App Horror??' and a few months later it led to a full idea for the film.”
