THE DEAD THING: Shudder Acquires Elric Kane’s Erotic Horror

The "obsessive and lust-driven thriller" hits the streamer on February 14, 2025.

Newly acquired by Shudder for North America, the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand, Elric Kane's erotic horror The Dead Thing will debut on the horror streamer on February 14, 2025.

Starring Blu Hunt (The New Mutants) and stuntman-turned-actor Ben Smith-Petersen (Mad Max: Fury Road),  The Dead Thing is set to have its U.S. Premiere at Brooklyn Horror Film Festival this evening, after playing London's FrightFest and Fantasia earlier this year.

Co-written by Webb Wilcoxen, The Dead Thing follows:

Alex (Hunt) is trapped in a downward spiral of shallow hookups and tepid connections, but she is caught off guard when her dating app swipes lead her into the arms of a mysterious, charming young man Kyle (Smith-Petersen).

Despite their passionate night, when the sun rises, the mystery man is nowhere to be found. Alex then sets out to find the one person who made her feel alive. Through her investigation, she reconnects with Kyle, but also digs up a ghastly supernatural secret. The pair quickly descend into a whirlwind of obsession, dependence, lust, and infatuation that has grave consequences.

In a statement, Kane (who is also co-host of FANGORIA's own Colors of the Dark podcast) expressed his excitement at joining the Shudder family:

“I’ve been a Shudder subscriber since almost day one and preaching about it on podcasts for just as long, so it’s a thrill to know our film is in such great hands […] Shudder continues to expand the scope of what horror can be by including films that push the boundaries of the genre. I consider our film to be one of these and even our scrappy production was inspired by many of the independent films they’ve released over the years.”

Shudder’s VP of Programming Samuel Zimmerman adds:

“With the perceptive and eerie THE DEAD THING, Elric Kane, who has dedicated so much to the genre already, makes a terrific leap into horror filmmaking. We’re thrilled to be its home,”

The Dead Thing is produced by Matt Mercer, Monte Yazzie and executive produced by FANGORIA's Rebekah McKendry.

If you're heading to Brooklyn Horror Film Festival today, catch The Dead Thing playing at 6:45pm. If not, make your Valentine's Night one to remember with The Dead Thing on Shudder on February 14.
