Neil Marshall's claustrophobic cave horror The Descent celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, with Lionsgate Limited releasing a new 4K edition SteelBook to celebrate.
Released in 2005, The Descent stars Shauna Macdonald, Natalie Mendoza, Alex Reid, Saskia Mulder, Nora-Jane Noone and MyAnna Buring as a group of daredevil women who go caving in the isolated Appalachian mountains, one year after the death of Sarah's (Macdonald) husband and young daughter. Unfortunately, they're not alone below the depths, as they find themselves stalked by a clan of humanoid, hungry monsters.
A sequel, The Descent Part 2, was released in 2009, with Marshall only involved as executive producer. Recently, the Dog Soldiers director has teased a Descent prequel that could “wrap up the story” by focussing on a group of miners who first found themselves trapped in the cave many years prior to the events of The Descent.
Lionsgate's new release of the 4K restoration of The Descent (which had its World Premiere at London's FrightFest back in August) comes with both the theatrical and unrated versions of the film, aka the ‘American' and ‘British' endings, one of which is far bleaker (no prizes for guessing which). The release also features new art from Matt Ryan Tobin, and a full list of special features as follows:
