Osgood Perkins' R-rated horror-comedy The Monkey hits theaters on February 21, with NEON releasing a brand new trailer today that seems to be making good on that “Everybody dies” promise in the tagline. Death by bowling ball, axe, explosion, swimming pool… it's all here.
Starring Theo James (The White Lotus), Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black), Elijah Wood (Maniac, The Lord Of The Rings, Bookworm), Christian Convery (Sweet Tooth), Colin O’Brien (Wonka), Rohan Campbell (Halloween Ends) and Sarah Levy (Schitt’s Creek), The Monkey is based on a Stephen King short of the same name included in his 1985 collection, Skeleton Crew.
In The Monkey, when twin brothers Hal and Bill discover their father’s old monkey toy in the attic, a series of gruesome deaths starts occurring all around them. The brothers decide to throw the monkey away and move on with their lives, growing apart over the years. But when the mysterious deaths begin again, the brothers must reunite to find a way to destroy the monkey for good before it takes the lives of everyone close to them.
Horror legend James Wan (Saw, Insidious, The Conjuring) serves as producer through his Atomic Monster banner.
The Monkey is Perkins' follow up to 2024's smash hit Longlegs, which was the highest-grossing independent film of the year (and one of our favorites!). But don't expect The Monkey to be simply Longlegs Round 2 – as we already know, The Monkey is a “hyper dark” horror comedy, with today's new trailer certainly confirming Perkins' words below:
“What if it's a comedy? […] Here's this monkey that doesn't do anything. It's not M3GAN. It doesn't attack. It's evil just in its existence. Things happen around it for no better reason than they do. Its presence makes people die in insane ways.
