One of the year's most talked-about body horrors, Coralie Fargeat's The Substance, is heading home to digital just in time for Halloween – in fact, on Halloween itself.
The Substance hits MUBI's very own streaming platform on October 31, perfect timing for those with Monstro ElisaSue costumes to show off their full glory.
Starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, The Substance was a huge hit for MUBI, racking up $34 million at the worldwide box office of a $17 million budget. The Substance also saw Fargeat win Best Screenplay at Cannes 2024, where the movie had its world premiere.
In The Substance:
Demi Moore gives a career-best performance as Elisabeth Sparkle, a former A-lister past her prime and suddenly fired from her fitness TV show by repellent studio head Harvey (Dennis Quaid). She is then drawn to the opportunity presented by a mysterious new drug: THE SUBSTANCE.
All it takes is one injection and she is reborn – temporarily – as the gorgeous, twentysomething Sue (Qualley). The only rule? Time needs to be split: exactly one week in one body, then one week in the other. No exceptions. A perfect balance. What could go wrong?
Along with (mostly) rave reviews from critics and fans alike, The Substance has also officially become Letterboxd's top-rated female-directed horror movie of all time.
Head on over to MUBI for a seven day free trial and don't miss The Substance when it hits the streamer on October 31.
