NEON is back in the horror game as the studio’s new body horror picture Together arrived at the box office this past weekend after a lengthy, much-hyped marketing campaign. Starring Alison Brie (Community) and Dave Franco (The Rental), the buzzy flick actually opened mid-week to get a jump on the competition, which included The Naked Gun remake and The Bad Guys 2. Despite arriving on a crowded weekend, it didn’t get lost.

Together landed at number six on the charts for the weekend with an estimated $6.8 million debut. Marvel’s Fantastic Four: First Steps ($40 million) once again landed in the top spot, with Bad Guys 2 ($22.2 million) arriving at number two. Naked Gun settled for third with $17 million. NEON’s latest also came in behind Superman ($13.9 million) and Jurassic World Rebirth ($8.7 million), which is rapidly closing in on $800 million globally after a killer summer.

Allied to what the movie made mid-week, Together has earned $10.8 million domestically thus far. That is a very good start, particularly considering the strong competition in the late summer window. NEON needs to keep the good vibes going though as the studio paid $17 million to acquire director Michael Shanks’ latest out of Sundance back in January.

The movie centers on Tim and Millie (Franco and Brie) who, years into their relationship, find themselves at a crossroads. They move to the country, abandoning everything familiar save for each other. As tensions rise, a nightmarish encounter with a mysterious force threatens to corrupt their lives – and their flesh.

NEON has been on a bit of a hot streak in the horror genre lately. Last year’s Longlegs became a downright indie sensation, pulling in $128 million worldwide becoming one of the biggest horror movies of the year. They reunited with director Oz Perkins for his Stephen King adaptation The Monkey, which also did quite well and made $69 million this year. The studio also has the long-awaited Shelby Oaks on the way.

Whether or not Together can continue to make room for itself as the summer rolls on remains to be seen. August is admittedly not nearly as crowded as July was, which is good news. But it’s also possible this might have benefited from a fall release. The same could be said for NEON’s The Life of Chuck, which started reasonably strong and was buried in subsequent weeks. Time will tell. For now though, it’s a successful launch.
