Godzilla is and always will be the King of the Monsters. But what’s a king without a queen? In his world, Mothra has been the Queen of the Monsters for decades. Now, Toho is celebrating her legacy with an entire year’s long celebration. 2026 is officially Mothra Year. What does that mean exactly? We’re so glad you asked!

November 3 has long been known as Godzilla Day, celebrating the monster’s cinematic debut in 1954. The highly-anticipated Godzilla Minus Zero is releasing in Japan on Godzilla Day this year. Mothra doesn’t have a day but Toho decided since 2026 represents the 65th anniversary of her debut in 1961, it was worth celebrating for a full 12 months. In a press release from Toho, they explained what fans can expect throughout Mothra Year.
“The celebration includes exhibitions, pop-up events, and film-related projects planned across Japan. Rather than focusing on a single title, Mothra Year highlights how the character has evolved across decades of Godzilla stories, emphasizing Mothra’s influence on the tone, themes, and emotional weight of the series. It is a chance to revisit Mothra not as a standalone icon, but as one of the most important recurring figures in the Godzilla universe.”
While specific details have yet to surface, one imagines that we’ll learn more sooner rather than later. The beloved kaiju made her debut in 1961’s Mothra, directed by the legendary Ishiro Honda, who also helmed the original Godzilla. The two first crossed paths in the aptly-titled Mothra vs. Godzilla in 1964.
In the years since, the two have encountered one another many, many times, most recently in 2024’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. In total, Mothra has appeared in well over a dozen movies, including a full-on trilogy beginning in 1996 with Rebirth of Mothra. Last year, IDW even published a comic series titled Mothra: Queen of the Monsters.
Where Godzilla is a force of nature to be reckoned with, Mothra is more of a force of nature that provides balance. She generally manifests as either a colossal caterpillar or as a massive imago moth. Mothra can fly at supersonic speeds and generate destructive gusts of wind. More than just a foe for Godzilla to contend with like Ghidorah or Rodan, she became more of an ally and a force for good.
As for where Mothra will turn up next? That remains to be seen. But Godzilla x Kong: Supernova is hitting theaters next year. We’ve also got Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 hitting Apple TV+ in February. There are multiple options on the table. One imagines we’ll be seeing her sooner rather than later. It is her year, after all.
