A cult film from six years ago is a new contender among the top horror movies on streaming this week. David Robert Mitchell's surreal, neo-noir horror film, Under the Silver Lake, which has rarely been available on streaming, has been added by Netflix and risen into the top ten, which is this week's biggest news.

Emilie Blichfeldt's gory body horror film, The Ugly Stepsister, has returned to the list this week after being absent for a couple of months and earning an Academy Award honor. More body horror? Yes, please.

Bring Her Back is another favorite that has reappeared, showing the strength and popularity of the film, even after three months on streaming, and even with its emotionally devastating story. There's plenty of exciting news for this group of streaming films, including the fact that two of the biggest award contenders are coming back to theaters this month.

  • The Long Walk - Streaming on Starz

Even though director Francis Lawrence's film, with a script from JT Mollner, was released with almost no notice on the Starz streaming platform, there was no stopping this heartbreaking yet life-affirming and very scary film from rising to the top.

A big part of the film's success, aside from the great direction and superb writing, is the excellent ensemble cast, including Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Garrett Wareing, Tut Nyuot, Charlie Plummer, Ben Wang, Roman Griffin Davis, Josh Hamilton, Judy Greer, and Mark Hamill.

No less than four directors had been attached to make the film during different attempts to bring the novel, written by Stephen King under his pseudonym Richard Bachman, to the screen. George Romero, Frank Darabont, James Vanderbilt (Nuremberg), and André Øvredal were potential directors of adaptations in previous attempts to adapt the story.

The Long Walk is now streaming on Starz.

  • Sinners - Streaming on HBO Max

Actor Delroy Lindo, who plays Delta Slim, who gave a powerful performance, especially during his monologue in the car, has been nominated for Best Supporting Actor by film critics' associations 18 times.

One recent nomination from the London Film Critics Circle is a reminder that while Lindo is known as a fixture in the film industry in the United States, he is British-born from Lewisham, London.

Sinners, which also stars Michael B. Jordan in a dual role, Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O'Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, will also make its return to theaters on January 23. It isn't yet known if the third run will include IMAX screenings, but hopefully, there will be some large-format screenings as well for anyone who missed out.

Sinners is now streaming on HBO Max and Prime.

  • Weapons - Streaming on HBO Max

Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, Toby Huss, Benedict Wong, and Amy Madigan star in Zach Cregger's fourth and highly successful film. Weapons has consistently remained in the top ten horror movies on streaming for six weeks since it began streaming on HBO Max on October 24.

Cregger has noted that his inspirations for Weapons are Paul Thomas Anderson's Magnolia, Denis Villeneuve's Prisoners, and the Pulizter Prize winning novel by Jennifer Egan, A Visit from the Goon Squad. The film has done extremely well both critically and at the box office, with a 93% fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes and a worldwide gross of $269.1 million as of September 2025.

Australian writer and director Michael Shanks's feature film debut is a supernatural body horror film that tells the story of two people who have come to an impasse in their relationship, but have literally been drawn together and resort to desperate measures to separate themselves.

After the film premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, it had great word of mouth from those who had seen it and attracted several buyers, with Neon taking distribution rights.

Dave Franco and Alison Brie, a married couple in real life, gave great performances that gave the film a believable romantic relationship in both its highs and lows. The body horror aspects are gruesome, inventive, and terrifying while retaining the emotional impact.

Together is now streaming on Hulu.

  • 28 Years Later - Streaming on Netflix

Friday, January 16, is the day that the sequel to 28 Years Later, 28 Weeks Later: The Bone Temple, will be released in theaters. At home, more than enough viewers are still watching the first installment in a projected new trilogy to give it a berth in the top ten at number five, even after 16 weeks on the chart. Will the release of the new film boost the film's viewership? It's possible and quite likely.

Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jack O'Connell, Alfie Williams, Chi Lewis-Parry, and Ralph Fiennes star in this very popular film.

  • Frankenstein - Streaming on Netflix

Guillermo del Toro's gorgeous adaptation of Mary Shelley's classic novel has had a busy week. It's just outside the top five most-watched horror films, and del Toro had a sold-out exhibit of the film's costumes and artifacts, called Frankenstein: Crafting the Tale Eternal, in Los Angeles. The exhibit sold out for its entire original run and was extended for two days because of the demand for tickets.

But there's even more good news: the film, which stars Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth, and Christoph Waltz, is heading back to theaters for a third run. If you loved watching the film at home and you missed it in theaters, you have another opportunity if you are in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York City, Orlando, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, Springfield, Vermont, or Washington, D.C., for one week starting on January 16.

Frankenstein is now streaming on Netflix.

  • Under the Silver Lake - Streaming on Netflix

Writer and director David Robert Mitchell's third feature, released after the critically acclaimed It Follows, is back on streaming six years after its theatrical release. The film was not as appreciated as much as It Follows and originally came to streaming three months later.

It has been described as a “surrealist neo-noir black comedy horror film” and stars Andrew Garfield, Riley Keough, Topher Grace, and Callie Hernandez with Sidney Sweeney and Riki Lindhome.

This cult film seems to be expanding its audience on Netflix, which is great, because it has only rarely been available on streaming since 2019.

  • The Ugly Stepsister - Streaming on Hulu

Norwegian writer and director Emilie Blichfeldt's debut feature is another horror film that has been shortlisted for the Academy Awards in addition to bouncing back into the top ten horror movies on streaming this week.  The honor was announced in December, and there hasn't been an update, but it is wonderful to see another scary movie, particularly a gruesome body horror movie, in Oscar contention.

Lea Myren, Thea Sofie Loch Næss, Ane Dahl Torp, and Flo Fagerli star in the film, which is a retelling of the folk tale Cinderella from the viewpoint of the stepsister.

The Ugly Stepsister is now streaming on Hulu.

  • Good Boy - Streaming on Shudder

Ben Leonberg's debut feature film is still doing well after five consecutive weeks in the top ten. It was released on October 24 and has done well critically, achieving a 90% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Shane Jensen, Arielle Friedman, Indy the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, and Larry Fessenden star in the film, which tells the story of a faithful dog who starts seeing a disturbing presence menacing the family home and tries his best to protect his owner.

Indy won the Astra Award from the Hollywood Creative Alliance for Best Performance in a Horror or Thriller, a first for an animal nominee. The win was controversial on social media.

Good Boy is now streaming on Shudder.

  • Bring Her Back - Streaming on HBO Max

Sally Hawkins' brilliant performance in Bring Her Back isn't being ignored during awards season since Hawkins has been nominated four times: twice by the Astra Awards and once by the Critics' Choice Super Awards.

The film and Hawkins were nominated for three awards at the Fangoria Chainsaw Awards: Best Wide Release, Best Lead Performance, and Best Screenplay in October 2025. It's good to see that another great scary movie is being recognized, as well as Hawkins, who gave the film so much.

Billy Barratt, Sora Wong, Jonah Wren Phillips, and Hawkins star in Danny and Michael Philippou's second feature film, from a script written by Danny Philippou and Bill Hinzman. The film has popped in and out of the top ten repeatedly since it was released on HBO Max on October 4.
