A new week brings a new list of the top ten horror movies on streaming, so don't look now, but the time is upon us. Fan favorite films continue to rule the roost, mostly, but some new blood is rising to the top for those looking for new chills and thrills.
Comedian turned director Kyle Mooney's disaster horror film about what could have happened on the night of December 31, 1999, Y2K, has leaped into the list this week. Independent distributor A24 released Y2K. Held, an underseen film from 2020, has rocketed to the top this week after being added to Prime.
Speak No Evil, the American remake of the chilling Dutch-Danish festival hit, has returned to the top ten after months of being absent from the limelight. The film, directed by James Watkins, director of the brutal cult film Eden Lake, and its resurgence of popularity speak to how much fans have responded to the film after there were doubts about it being remade at all.

The Substance - Streaming on Mubi
Image Credit: IMDB You may not be surprised to see the film at the top of the list again this week, but it is surely great to see such an adventurous body horror film continue to be successful. The Substance is also a movie from an independent distributor and streaming service, Mubi, so it is even more of an achievement since Mubi isn't as well known as other apps.
With two female lead actresses, Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, and a story about societal pressures upon women, especially actresses, to never age, the film has done spectacularly well. Dennis Quaid's performance as a slimy TV executive is really something to behold. The whole film is a sensory experience, unlike many other films in the subgenre. Director Coralie Fargeat, Moore, Qualley, and Quaid really went for the gusto and were rewarded for giving it all to the screen.
The Substance is now streaming on Mubi.
Speak No Evil - Streaming on Prime
Image Credit: IMDB The remake of the terrifying Dutch-Danish film from 2022 has rebounded into the top ten this week with a vengeance. Produced by Blumhouse and directed by James Watkins (Eden Lake), it has done well with critics and audiences alike and has been available on streaming since September last year.
In it, an American family who meets a British couple while on vacation begins to believe that all might not be well while at their remote home. James McAvoy, Mackenzie Davis, Aisling Franciosi, Alix West Lefler, Dan Hough, and Scoot McNairy star in this disquieting tale.
Speak No Evil is streaming on Prime.
Y2K - Streaming on Max
Image Credit: IMDB Comedian Kyle Mooney directed and co-wrote his feature debut film, Y2K, which enters the top ten for the first time this week. It is a frightfully funny film about some of the worst fears, and some people probably didn't think about them, actually coming to pass when the clock flipped over to the year 2000.
Jaeden Martell, Rachel Zegler, Julian Dennison, The Kid Laroi, Lachlan Watson, Daniel Zolghadri, Mason Gooding, Lauren Balone, Eduardo Franco, and Fred Durst, looking very much like he did as the front man of Limp Bizkit in 1999, star in this wild horror comedy.
Y2K is streaming on Max.
Heretic - Streaming on Max
Image Credit: IMDB As two young women struggle to comprehend the motives of the man whose home they willingly entered because of their faith, they find a darkness in the heart of someone they hoped would convert to their belief. Sophie Turner and Chloe East, both former members of the Church of Latter-day Saints, star in this film with Hugh Grant, who is usually known for his charming screen presence.
Grant received nominations for Best Actor from the Golden Globes, the Critics' Choice Awards, and the BAFTA Awards for his performance, and the writer/director duo of Scott Beck and Bryan Woods were nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for the film.

Nosferatu - Streaming on Peacock
Image Credit: IMDB Willem Dafoe plays Nosferatu's version of the Dracula character, Abraham Van Helsing, named Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz. This is the third film in a row that Dafoe has collaborated with Eggers as an actor, following The Lighthouse and The Northman. The celebrated character actor obviously loves working with Eggers.
The story goes that Dafoe watched Eggers' debut feature, The Witch, and they had dinner. They have been working together ever since. Nosferatu also stars Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, and Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, and Simon McBurney
Nosferatu is streaming on Peacock.
Held - Streaming on Prime
Image Credit: IMDB Another new addition to the list this week is Held, the story of how a couple's ailing marriage is put to the test when they are held hostage in an isolated vacation rental by an unseen Voice that commands their every move.
Jill Awbrey, who wrote the script, Bart Johnson, and Travis Cluff star in Held, which was co-directed by Cluff and Chris Lofing. A little-known film released in 2020, Held has risen to prominence after being added to Prime and becoming a film that fans have tracked down in the last few years.
Held is streaming on Prime.
The Gorge - Streaming on Apple TV
Image Credit: IMDB Two snipers who are tasked with protecting the world from creatures called The Hollow Men, who live within the titular gorge, find common ground after they disregard the rules that command them not to contact each other while on duty for a year.
A tentative bond forms between them as they have to defend humanity from the unknown force inside the mysterious valley. Miles Teller, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Sigourney Weaver star in the Apple Film, directed by Scott Derrickson, which made its debut on Apple's streaming service.
The Gorge is now streaming on Apple TV.
Strange Darling - Streaming on Paramount+
Image Credit: IMDB Willa Fitzgerald, Kyle Gallner, Barbara Hershey, and Ed Begley Jr. star in Strange Darling, a film about a serial killer on the loose told in six non-linear chapters. Written and directed by JT Mollner, who has written the script for the upcoming adaptation of Stephen King's novel The Long Walk, it is a cat-and-mouse thrill ride about four strange human beings at odds with each other.
The striking images of the film, particularly the central image of Fitzgerald's The Lady running through a field, like so many final girls have done before, are the products of Mollner's inspiration for the film and the work of the cinematographer, actor Giovanni Ribisi.
Strange Darling is now streaming on Fubo and Paramount+ on Showtime.
Longlegs - Streaming on Hulu
Image Credit: IMDB Writer and director Osgood Perkins' fourth film, Longlegs, was Perkins' breakthrough hit after a respected run of cult favorite films that fans discussed and argued about online. With a cast that includes horror favorite Maika Monroe, Alicia Witt, Blair Underwood, and Nicolas Cage, the film was the highest-grossing independent film of the year.
An occult nightmare woven through with 70s glam rock, the standards of the FBI serial killer procedural films, and some really scary dolls coalesced into something that audiences responded to with obsession. Some of the film's scariest moments are its most subtle and oddly humorous moments, which are wonderful to see.
Longlegs is now streaming on Hulu.
Oddity - Streaming on Max
Image Credit: IMDB After her twin sister is brutally murdered under suspicious circumstances, a blind clairvoyant with psychometric powers, Darcy Odello, becomes determined to find her sister's killer or killers in Oddity. In her quest, Darcy visits her sister's widower with an unnerving life-sized golem to find the truth using her powers.
Written and directed by Irish filmmaker Damien McCarthy, who has had a streaming hit with his previous film Caveat, and a growing fanbase, the film has become even more popular after being released on Hulu to a wide audience.
