Xavier Gens' toothy action-horror Under Paris has nabbed a second wave, with Variety reporting today that the shark sequel could start shooting in 2026.
With more than 102 million viewers, Under Paris scored the best non-English launch on Netflix when it released in June of this year.
Variety also report that key cast members will return including the Oscar-nominated Bérénice Bejo.
In Under Paris:
Set in the Summer of 2024, the film unfolds in Paris which is hosting the World Triathlon Championships on the Seine for the first time. Sophia, a brilliant scientist, learns from Mika, a young environmental activist, that a large shark is swimming deep in the river. To avoid a bloodbath at the heart of the city, they have no choice but to join forces with Adil, the Seine river police commander.
Plot details for Under Paris 2 are still under wraps, but back in June the Frontier(s) filmmaker spoke to Variety about a then-potential sequel, saying that “it will take place in a Paris that is entirely submerged under water.”
Produced on a budget of €19.6 million (about $16-20 million), Under Paris received pretty positive praise from genre fans, with even the horror master himself Stephen King expressing his enjoyment of the film after Twitter convinced him it wasn't anything like Sharknado.
As far as we're concerned, one can never have enough shark movies. We'll bring you more news on Under Paris as it swims in and, until then, maybe keep out of the water.
