If you thought attempting to watch Sony Picture’s new adaptation of Until Dawn once was bad, the studio has a challenge for viewers everywhere: survive in a repeating loop just like the teens in the film for the chance at a prize and real glory. They’ve just announced a “Survive Until Dawn” screening competition to take place tomorrow, April 22, challenging audiences to experience the film’s horror over and over again.
The competitions will be held in eight cities across the US, including Los Angeles, New York, Seattle, Chicago, Washington D.C., Denver, Atlanta, and Miami, pitting viewers against the clock to see who can literally survive until dawn. Competitors must stay awake all night (or all twelve hours, from 7PM local time to 7AM the next day) as the film plays on repeat, with disqualification for phone use, bathroom breaks, or dozing off. The prize for winning the competition hasn’t been announced, but “eternal bragging rights” are also included, so I guess that’s cool too.
Until Dawn stars Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Odessa A’zion, Ji-young Yoo, Belmont Cameli, Maia Mitchell, and Peter Stormare, the latter of whom appeared in the original video game. While the film itself is not a direct adaptation of the game, the mechanics and storyline remain largely the same. The film’s logline is as follows:
One year after her sister Melanie mysteriously disappeared, Clover and her friends head into the remote valley where she vanished in search of answers. Exploring an abandoned visitor center, they find themselves stalked by a masked killer and horrifically murdered one by one…only to wake up and find themselves back at the beginning of the same evening. Trapped in the valley, they’re forced to relive the night again and again – only each time the killer threat is different, each more terrifying than the last. Hope dwindling, the group soon realizes they have a limited number of deaths left, and the only way to escape is to survive until dawn.
