Jamie Blanks' Urban Legend is the latest 90s slasher to get the reboot treatment, with The Hollywood Reporter today revealing that Gary Dauberman (‘Salem's Lot, the upcoming Until Dawn) is set to produce via his Coin Operated banner.
Sony's genre division Screen Gems is said to be in early stages of rebooting the 1998 horror, with Shanrah Wakefield penning the script.
As THR remind, Blanks' original Urban Legend (penned by Silvio Horta) starred Jared Leto, Alicia Witt, Tara Reid, Rebecca Gayheart and Joshua Jackon, and featured a killer whose kills were inspired by popular urban legends of the period, such as death by Pop Rocks and soft drinks or being pursued in a car by a gang for flashing it a reminder to turn on their headlights. Two sequels followed: Urban Legends: Final Cut in 2000, and the direct-to-video Urban Legends: Bloody Mary in 2005.
The upcoming reboot is said to explore urban legends “in a post-digital world”, so we could be looking at things like Internet Red Rooms, the Elevator Game or creepypastas.
Alongside Dauberman, original Urban Legend producer Neal Moritz is also in talks to return as producer.
In our interview with Witt, the Longlegs star already said she'd love to come back for another round of Urban Legend. So, will Natalie Simon return? Watch this space.
Looks like the rebootissaince shows no sign of slowing down! Look out for more Urban Legend updates as we get them.
