It wasn’t quite a threepeat, but Weapons has topped the box office for a third weekend nonetheless. Director Zach Cregger’s much-acclaimed, original horror movie led the way for most of August. After briefly surrendering the top spot to Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters last weekend, it has reclaimed the crown over a pretty quiet Labor Day. Long live the king, as it were.

On its fourth weekend in theaters overall, Weapons arrived at number one with an estimated $10.2 million. When we account for the Monday holiday, that number grows to $12.4 million. That brings its new running total to $234.6 million worldwide, having already crossed the $200 million barrier on its third weekend. That makes it by far one of the biggest horror movies of the year, trailing only Final Destination Bloodlines ($286 million worldwide) and Ryan Coogler’s Sinners ($365 million worldwide). That’s not bad company to be in. All three of those are Warner Bros. releases, which is also impressive.

Weapons takes place after all but one child from the same class vanishes on the same night at precisely the same time. With no answers, the surrounding community questions who – or what – is behind their disappearance. The cast includes Julia Garner (Ozark), Josh Brolin (No Country for Old Men), Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange), Alden Ehrenreich (Ironheart), Amy Madigan (Streets of Fire) and Austin Abrams (Euphoria).

The bigger thing here is that it was a very, very quiet Labor Day weekend overall, which was good for Cregger and WB, bad for the industry at large. To that end, Steven Spielberg’s Jaws landed at number two with an estimated $9.8 million across the four-day holiday stretch. That 50th anniversary re-release performed better than Caught Stealing ($9.5 million), The Roses ($8 million) and the long-awaited remake of The Toxic Avenger ($2.2 million).

It all serves to illustrate just how difficult it has become to get audiences to turn up for anything that isn’t familiar or a must-see event. Audiences are more unpredictable than ever and weekends like this are, unfortunately, far more common than they once were. That makes what Weapons has accomplished all the more impressive. Next up for Cregger is a reboot of the Resident Evil franchise for Sony Pictures. What comes after that is up in the air but  between this and Barbarian, it’s safe to say he’ll have plenty of options.
