Hitting theaters on January 17 2025, Leigh Whannell's Wolf Man is one of horror fans' most anticipated movies of next year – and probably will be even more now that it's been officially Rated R for “bloody violent content and grisly images.” Yay!

Starring Christopher Abbott (Poor Things, Sanctuary, Possessor) and Julia Garner (Ozark, Apartment 7A), Blumhouse and Universal's Wolf Man is the latest modern reimagining of one the latter's iconic Universal Monsters, following Whannell's 2020 shocker The Invisible Man.

In Wolf Man:

Christopher Abbott stars as Blake, a San Francisco husband and father, who inherits his remote childhood home in rural Oregon after his own father vanishes and is presumed dead. With his marriage to his high-powered wife, Charlotte (Julia Garner), fraying, Blake persuades Charlotte to take a break from the city and visit the property with their young daughter, Ginger (Matilda Firth; Hullraisers, Coma).

But as the family approaches the farmhouse in the dead of night, they’re attacked by an unseen animal and, in a desperate escape, barricade themselves inside the home as the creature prowls the perimeter. As the night stretches on, however, Blake begins to behave strangely, transforming into something unrecognizable, and Charlotte will be forced to decide whether the terror within their house is more lethal than the danger without.

Wolf Man‘s official MPA rating also lists “some language” as a reason for that glorious R Rating, but frankly we're more excited to dive into those grisly images that we know Whannell is so adept at bringing to life.

Originally intended for this October (yesterday, actually, on October 15), Wolf Man was delayed until next January to give it more time in post-production. Given the success of Blumhouse's M3GAN in January of last year, it seems that studios are no longer afraid of putting horror movies on at the beginning of the year.

In a recent interview with Collider, Abbott spoke about Wolf Man‘s “old-school style” prosthetics work, and that fans of Whannell's takes on classic tales are in for a treat:

“I think he did a great take on definitely his version of what that story could be. If you liked Invisible Man , then you’re definitely gonna like this.”
