You’ll Do Bad Things is influenced by the Italian Giallo style of filmmaking,” Boss tells Fango exclusively. “While our series is also a meta exploration of the obsession with the true crime genre, a lot of the stylistic elements of Giallo come into play, both visually and through the storytelling. In comparison to Giallo, what I think American horror films miss sometimes when making narrative art is the celebration of art within the work.”

In addition to the covers, we’ve also got some preview pages from the first issue for you to check out below. Now, this isn’t pure Giallo but it is certainly influenced by the works of masters of the genre such as Dario Argento. These covers certainly show off that influence. As for the specifics of the covers, here’s a breakdown of what you’re looking at…

  • You'll Do Bad Things #1 Cover E by Gigi Cavenago
  • You'll Do Bad Things #3 Cover A by Tyler Boss
  • You'll Do Bad Things #3 Cover B by Adriano Turtulici
  • You'll Do Bad Things #3 Cover C (1:10 incentive) by Joshua Hixson

“Giallo films normally take place in an Italian city, and showcase all the rich history and art in that location,” Boss added. “While the opening kill of a movie like Halloween takes place in the American nuclear home, the opening attack in the Giallo film Bird with The Crystal Plumage takes place in a modern art gallery in Rome, featuring ominous bronze statues—sculptures of the era. The stark, bright studio lighting in this scene is in contrast with the dark German expressionist-inspired chiaroscuro lighting that populated most American slashers of the ’80s.”

So, what is this book about, exactly? What have Boss and Turtulici cooked up for you, dear reader? The official synopsis for the book reads as follows:

“In You’ll Do Bad Things, it’s been ten years since the release of He Came in with a Smile, the true crime smash hit that chronicled the brutal murders committed by the Nursery Rhyme Killer. But in the decade since its release, its author Seth Holms hasn’t produced another title. He wants to write a story with a happy ending, but every time his fingers clack across the keyboard it always ends in his character's death. Worse yet? These tales of blood and barbarity that flow so freely from Seth’s mind are starting to happen in real life.”

“Our series artist, Adriano Turtulici, brings that Giallo sensibility innately to the book,” Boss said of his collaborator on the book. “In the first chapter, I had a scene that originally took place in a school auditorium. The book takes place in ‘A New York City,’ but my setting for this scene was ingrained as deeply suburban. Adriano, when approaching the script, turned the scene almost operatic. Instead of it being a school talent show, he transformed the scene into one featuring a child prodigy magician performing in front of thunderous applause.”

“I’m also beyond thrilled that the amazing Italian artist Gigi Cavenago has captured our leather-clad, knife-wielding killer so perfectly in his stunning variant cover,” Boss added.

You’ll Do Bad Things #1 hits shelves on March 26. For more, check out the cover for FANGORIA #27, which honors the great David Lynch
