For as long as I’ve loved rom-coms, I’ve been very aware that there’s a subsection of us superfans that would prefer if the lead were a little bit less human. Blame it on watching too much Beauty and the Beast growing up — or maybe Hellboy, in my case — but it’s absolutely there, and scream queen Melissa Barrera’s newest film Your Monster is here to please that very specific subsection of fans. Especially now that it’s just released a new poster ahead of its Friday debut.
Barrera stars as Laura Franco, an actress who finds herself unceremoniously dumped while recovering from surgery. (Rough.) When she returns to her childhood home to cope after finding out that her ex has also stolen their joint work, things start to look up when she finds Tommy Dewey’s monster, who she falls heads over heels for as he teaches her to accept herself — and her inner rage, too. The new poster gives us a heartwarming look into their romance, with the two displayed in front of a cartoon heart, with Laura’s half all cute and cuddly, and the monster’s giving a more…realistic depiction of the body part.
The film also stars Meghann Fahy, who’s set to lead another horror film soon, in the Christopher Landon-directed Drop. It’s written and directed by Caroline Lindy, who makes her feature film debut after adapting the film from her 2020 short of the same name. She also produces alongside Kayla Foster, Kira Carstensen, Melanie Donkers, and Shannon Riley.
Your Monster is Barrera’s second horror film of the year, after leading the cast of Universal’s vampire film Abigail alongside Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton, and Alisha Weir. She is also set to star in an untitled James Wan project with Simu Liu, as well as the reality show horror film The One, alongside Lana Condor and Nicholas Hoult.
Your Monster premieres in theaters this Friday, October 25. Check out the new poster below:
