It looks like Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie might have found its leading man. Deadline reports that Wolfs and Euphoria star Austin Abrams is in early talks to star in the upcoming film from the man behind Barbarian. It has not been confirmed whether he’ll be playing a character familiar to the popular video game franchise — say, Leon Kennedy — or a new one entirely.
Plot details for Cregger’s take on Resident Evil are also sparse, though we do know he’ll be co-writing the script with Shay Hatten, and that the film is set to hit theaters on September 18, 2026. If Abrams locks in a deal to star, this will be his second time working with Cregger after teaming up on his upcoming film Weapons, which hits theaters this summer. He’s also set to star in the sci-fi film Whalefall.
The new Resident Evil film will be produced by Constantin Film, with Robert Kulzer producing for the company alongside Roy Lee for Vertigo Entertainment, Miri Yoon, and PlayStation Productions.
Cregger’s film will be the eighth Resident Evil film to hit theaters. Milla Jovovich led six films in the franchise over fourteen years, starting in 2002 with the eponymous film and spinning off a number of sequels. While that series ended in 2016, there was also a reboot, Welcome to Raccoon City, which premiered in 2021 and starred Kaya Scodelario, Avan Jogia, and Robbie Amell, which was also coincidentally the last year we received a new Resident Evil game, with Resident Evil Village introducing the world to lady Dimitrescu and forever altering the state of the Internet.
Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil film hits theaters on September 18, 2026. Stay tuned to FANGORIA for more information as it arrives.
