With Weapons hype at an all time high, horror fans are already eagerly Zach Cregger's next project – a Resident Evil movie that, according to the man himself, is going to be “more faithful to the initial games”, but also not “completely obedient” to the lore – he also thinks it's going to rip, and we're inclined to believe him.
Starring Wolfs and Euphoria's Austin Abrams (also seen in Cregger's upcoming Weapons), Resident Evil is currently scheduled for release domestically on September 18, 2026 via Sony. The script is co-written by Shay Hatten (Ballerina, John Wick: Chapter 3 & Chapter 4). No word yet on plot details, or which of the iconic Capcom survival horror games it will directly adapt, if any. We do know that, per Cregger, the story “will be built in the spirit of those games and follows one central protagonist from point A to point B, as they descend deeper into hell.”
In a new interview with ComicBook.com, the Barbarian director expanded on why he wanted to try his hand at adapting a game series that has had a number of big screen iterations (some more successful than others):
“Because I love the games […] I played all of the games. I played Resident Evil 4 a hundred times through. I’m obsessed with it. And so, I just want to tell a story that feels like it’s honoring the experience you get when you play the games. I haven’t seen the movies, that’s just not my thing. But the games are my thing. That’s just a playground I just love….I think the movie is going to rip. I think it’s going to rip.”
It's interesting that Cregger says he hasn't seen any of the Resident Evil movies, as his film will be the eighth to hit theaters. Milla Jovovich led six films in the franchise over fourteen years, starting in 2002 with the eponymous film and spinning off a number of sequels. While that series ended in 2016, there was also a reboot, Welcome to Raccoon City, which premiered in 2021 and starred Kaya Scodelario, Avan Jogia, and Robbie Amell.
All in all, it's a damn good time to be a Resident Evil fan, with Resident Evil Requiem, the ninth mainline game in the series, releasing on February 27, 2026. Stay tuned for updates.
