Supernatural Horror THE WRETCHED Scares Up A Sequel

Brett and Drew Pierce's 2020 witch flick made big at the box office during the pandemic.

Supernatural horror The Wretched has a sequel in development, with Variety reporting today that directors Brett and Drew Pierce are currently casting for a September shoot.

Starring John-Paul Howard, Piper Curda and Zarah Mahler, The Wretched followed a young boy who faces off against his new neighbor who happens to be an evil skin-crawling witch.

According to Variety, The Wretched 2 will follow:

… a small-town deputy [who] is pulled into a rash of missing children’s cases only to discover that the skin-changing Wretch is back and has been preying upon the families of his community for a century.

Back in 2020, at the height of the pandemic, limited theater operations pushed The Wretched  to #1 at the box office on its opening weekend. After success at drive-in theaters, the little indie horror that could went on to gross a worldwide total of $4.3 million from a $66,000 budget.

Speaking with Variety, the Pierce brothers spoke more on the recent rush of love for independent horror and what direction they're taking The Wretched 2 in:

Independent horror has been staking out its claim at the box office in the last couple of years with films like Terrifier 3 and Late Night With the Devil, and audiences are craving more from these original stories and voices. It just seems like the right time to bring our Witch back as she was born out of us wanting more from our creature features that we just weren’t getting. We’re going to push this story and the body horror into uncomfortable places.

Sounds promising! Look out for more on The Wretched 2 as we get it. The Wretched is now streaming on Shudder.
